Thanks, Scott. 00:00:00
Okay, guys, it's time for you to become a scientist 00:00:01
and apply your estimation and measurement skills 00:00:03
with this program's hands-on activity. 00:00:05
It was developed by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. 00:00:07
Hey, let's check in on the students 00:00:12
at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 00:00:14
NASA Connect asked us to show you this program's hands-on activities. 00:00:21
The first activity is called Serving Sizes. 00:00:29
Here are the main objectives for the first activity. 00:00:36
Students, you will estimate serving sizes of different foods 00:00:42
and compare their estimates to serving size information 00:00:46
provided on Nutrition Facts food labels. 00:00:49
Good morning, class. 00:00:53
Food labels and other guides often use serving sizes 00:00:55
to describe a recommended single portion of food or drink. 00:00:58
NASA Connect asked us to investigate the question, 00:01:02
what is a serving size? 00:01:06
Your teacher will provide you with the Nutrition Facts labels 00:01:08
from these food items. 00:01:11
One bag of frozen peas, one box of dry breakfast cereal, 00:01:13
one bag of popped popcorn, and a two-liter bottle of soft drink. 00:01:17
Copies of the labels are to be distributed to groups. 00:01:22
You are to determine appropriate serving sizes for the different foods. 00:01:26
Write the word Estimate onto three paper plates and onto one cup. 00:01:30
Mark the other three paper plates and cup as Food Label. 00:01:35
On the student handout, write the name of each food 00:01:39
under the Food Name column. 00:01:42
For each food, estimate how many cups or fractions of cups 00:01:45
Make up one serving size. 00:01:50
Record your estimate in the second column of the table 00:01:53
and measure the portions into the estimate plates and cup. 00:01:56
Next, measure onto the Food Label plate and cup 00:02:00
the serving size for each food based on the Nutrition Facts label. 00:02:03
You are then to write a short paragraph 00:02:08
answering the activities discussion questions. 00:02:10
If you have access to Personal Digital Assistance, or PDAs, 00:02:13
PDA is a great device for keeping a journal. 00:02:18
You can use the infrared capabilities to peer-edit journal entries with others. 00:02:21
Later in the show, our students at the New Mexico School for the Deaf 00:02:27
will show you the second activity called Your Energy Needs. 00:02:31
Back to you, Jennifer. 00:02:35
