We're learning all about the moon and Mars. 00:00:00
The moon is a really cool place. There's a lot less gravity there. 00:00:04
And that's going to make things so much easier to do. 00:00:07
You think so? You might be surprised how difficult living in an alien environment can be. 00:00:10
How is that? 00:00:15
There are a lot of things you might not think of. 00:00:16
Have you ever gone camping in the mountains? 00:00:18
That's an alien environment? 00:00:20
Well, not quite the same thing, but you do have to think a little differently. 00:00:22
For example, on a 10,000 foot mountain, 00:00:26
the air pressure is low and water boils at 90 degrees Celsius instead of 100 degrees. 00:00:28
So food doesn't cook as quickly. 00:00:33
Oh, I get it. 00:00:35
So on the moon where there isn't any atmosphere, 00:00:36
the water would boil at an even lower temperature. 00:00:38
Wait a minute. 00:00:43
If there isn't any atmosphere, then we would have to bring our own oxygen supply. 00:00:44
Actually, you couldn't just bring an oxygen mask. 00:00:48
You would have to have a space suit. 00:00:50
I have one in my closet. 00:00:52
Why would you need that? 00:00:56
A space suit protects you from temperature extremes. 00:00:58
On the moon, it's about 130 degrees Celsius in the daytime and minus 170 Celsius at night. 00:01:00
More importantly, because there is no air on the moon, 00:01:07
your blood wouldn't boil without a space suit. 00:01:10
Oh, I see you found it. 00:01:13
Okay, you saw me on the space suit. Is there anything else? 00:01:15
Well, now you will find that tasks are tougher with a space suit. 00:01:18
I'll give you a few simple things to do. 00:01:21
Space suit 00:01:27
Even easy tasks become difficult. 00:01:37
Let's try something else. 00:01:39
And suppose you're on a planet where the gravitational force is very strong. 00:01:40
For example, you could stand on Jupiter. 00:01:44
You'd weigh two and a half times your Earth weight. 00:01:46
Now, I'll cut you some slack and just make you weigh one and a half times your normal weight. 00:01:49
Thirty pounds. 00:01:53
And four more here. 00:01:56
And here. 00:02:03
Thanks a lot. Now it's really hard to move. 00:02:05
Imagine living on a world like the moon where it is dark for two weeks at a time and then light for two weeks. 00:02:07
It would be pretty hard getting used to going to sleep when it's light for that long of a time. 00:02:12
That would be a lot easier to live with than wearing these weights. 00:02:16
So what have you learned about Mars? 00:02:19
Well, I haven't done a lot of research on Mars yet. 00:02:21
Why don't you go see Dr. Bobby Braun with NASA Langley Research Center. 00:02:24
He's done a lot of research on Mars. 00:02:27
Thanks, Dr. D. That's where I'm headed next. 00:02:29
See you later, guys. 00:02:31
