Each year EU-wide, 167,000 deaths are attributable to work-related accidents/illnesses, and the number of occupational accidents is estimated at 7 million.
Apart from tragic individual consequences, the loss of earnings is around a billion euros a year. Improving workers' health and safety is therefore key for the EU. The European Commissions 5-year strategy is aiming for a 25% reduction in occupational accidents by 2012.
This is what the campaign by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) is about.

This is Geri de Kock's farm in northern France. 00:00:00
Madame de Kock, who's a salaried member of staff, was working on the palletiser when she had an industrial accident. 00:00:05
As a result of this accident, Viviane de Kock was paralysed for several months. 00:00:30
As for Geri de Kock, it was a painful way of realising what an industrial accident means. 00:00:40
With a work-related accident occurring every three and a half minutes in the European Union, 00:01:00
the loss of revenue linked to absence from work costs European workers about one billion euros per year. 00:01:20
As for employers, they have to bear the costs linked to sick pay, replacing absent workers and loss of productivity, 00:01:26
a good part of which is not covered by insurance. 00:01:33
To help Europe become more competitive, the European Commission has decided to adopt a five-year plan 00:01:38
aimed at reducing industrial accidents by 25% before 2012. 00:01:44
It is of course in the interests of the worker to stay healthy, 00:01:50
but it is also in the interests of the employer and the economy in Europe in general 00:01:54
to reduce industrial accidents as far as possible. 00:02:00
In this context, the European Agency for Health and Safety at Work, which has relay points in all Member States, 00:02:04
as here in Warsaw, is launching a widespread information campaign to encourage risk evaluation everywhere. 00:02:10
This is what Jerzy de Kock did after his wife had the accident. 00:02:34
Helped by his specialist doctor, he evaluated the various workstations himself, 00:03:00
not forgetting the palletiser responsible for the accident, an accident which he believes could have been avoided. 00:03:06
