In 1936, General Francisco Franco led a coup against the government of the Republic. 00:00:07
This started the Spanish Civil War that lasted until 1939. 00:00:16
During the war, the Spanish population was divided into two areas. 00:00:28
The Republican area, which supported the Republic 00:00:32
and the national army, who supported General Franco. 00:00:36
Franco's troops advanced towards the Republican area, 00:00:41
and the Nationalists won the Spanish Civil War. 00:00:47
But the Spanish Civil War had a lot of consequences. 00:00:50
It was devastating to the country. 00:00:57
Hundreds of thousands of people died. 00:01:01
Many others had to go into exile. 00:01:04
And there were few economic losers. 00:01:07
A long time of hunger started, and the society was divided into winners and losers. 00:01:16
The Republicans were persecuted, imprisoned, and murdered by the Nationalists. 00:01:26
