I'm Jacqueline and this is Devin. We're Mrs. Dunn's fourth grade class. 00:00:00
Hi. We saw on the NASA Sci-Fi Kids Club website that you're working on an experiment to clean up an oil spill. 00:00:06
What kind of oil did you spill? 00:00:11
It's not a real oil spill, but a simulated one. 00:00:13
We used vegetable oil and cocoa powder and mixed it together to make an environmentally friendly oil. 00:00:16
That's a good idea. Crude oil, such as motor oil, can be damaging to the environment, even on a small scale. 00:00:21
Exactly. Next, we made our own mini ocean by pouring 5 milliliters of salt into a shallow aluminum pan full of water. 00:00:28
Then, we slowly poured our oil on top of the water in the pan. 00:00:35
What happened? 00:00:39
Because oil is lighter than water, it spreads out and floats on top. 00:00:40
It looks kind of pretty with rainbow colors, but it isn't so pretty when we try to clean it up. 00:00:44
What do you use to clean it up? 00:00:49
We are trying a variety of things, such as absorbents, skimmers, and detergents. 00:00:51
What are absorbents? 00:00:56
Absorbents are materials such as straw, sawdust, and peat moss used to absorb the oil off the top of the water. 00:00:58
So, did the absorbents help clean up the oil? 00:01:04
Not very well. We still have a lot of oil left, and it's very messy. 00:01:06
Next, we are trying spoons to simulate skimmers, which are bowl-shaped devices used to skim the oil off the top of the water. 00:01:10
Does that work better than the absorbents? 00:01:19
No, and we didn't get much oil either. 00:01:21
Last, we are trying detergent. That works much better. 00:01:23
The oil immediately moves and forms gobs, but a lot of detergent wouldn't be good for the environment. 00:01:26
That would turn into one big bubble bath. 00:01:32
So, what did you conclude with your experiment? 00:01:34
We concluded that there is no easy way to clean up an oil spill, but the best thing is to prevent them from ever happening. 00:01:36
I agree. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us. 00:01:44
You're welcome. 00:01:47
Goodbye from Macy's Science Class at Key Largo School in Key Largo, Florida. 00:01:48
