Welcome to a new episode of HealthyCast in Saramago FM. 00:00:02
Hello everyone, today is this episode, we are going to talk about the antibiotics. 00:00:11
But before we are going to learn about science, let me share a quick anecdote. 00:00:19
Did you know that the first time Alexander Lemmings discovered penicillin, 00:00:27
he probably wasn't thinking about saving lives, but rather about cleaning up his messy laboratory. 00:00:32
Yes, that's how casual one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the 20th century was. 00:00:39
After this introduction, what are antibiotics? 00:00:45
They are medicines that fight with bacterial infections, in people and in animals. 00:00:48
They are only effective with bacteria, not with other illness. 00:00:53
There are two types, broad spectrum that kill all bacteria and narrow spectrum that only kill specific bacteria. 00:00:57
That's awesome. What different forms they are? 00:01:05
There are three forms. Oral cavity, like pills or capsules, and topically, like cream or drugs, and also by injections only in serious cases. 00:01:07
Oh, my favorite one is by oral cavity because it's easier to treat. But why are antibiotics dangerous? 00:01:20
Because of excessive use of them. This can cause less sensitivity to bacteria and can be harder to treat. 00:01:28
Also, they can cause second effects. 00:01:37
And why is it so important to take care about antibiotics? 00:01:40
The proper use of antibiotics is important because they save lives by treating bacterial infections, 00:01:44
prevent the spread of disease and reduce serious complications. 00:01:51
However, inappropriate use can lead to antibiotics less resistant, limiting treatment options and making infections harder to treat. 00:01:55
Now we are going to do an interview with a great nurse to tell us a little more about the subject. 00:02:04
Hello, very good. I am Marco Gutierrez, nurse of the hospital 12 de Octubre. 00:02:21
Hello, we wanted to ask you how it is to be an expert in antibiotics. 00:02:27
Well, for me it is the best job because you learn a lot and day by day you discover new things. 00:02:32
And how did you decide to specialize in the subject? 00:02:37
Gracias a vosotros. ¡Un placer! 00:03:06
Mario, did you know that in Spain we consume more than 1,000 boxes of antibiotics on a year? 00:03:18
That's impossible. There are lots of antibiotics. 00:03:24
And you know what is the most selling one? 00:03:27
Yes, it's the antitropin. 00:03:30
And it's used for treating a variety of bacterial infections like pneumonia or strep. 00:03:32
Wow, I know that also penicillin is very famous, no? 00:03:38
Yes, that's true. 00:03:42
But you know that in 2014 was estimated that multiresistant bacteria claimed the lives of around 50,000 people in Europe and in USA? 00:03:44
Oh my God, I didn't know it. 00:03:55
But that's amazing. 00:03:57
Yes, is it? 00:03:59
I think we have learned a lot in this podcast. 00:04:00
Do you think so? 00:04:05
Yes, I think so. 00:04:07
Thanks for hearing with us. 00:04:08
