Hello, 15 weeks to go.
00:00:00
This week we've got something very interesting.
00:00:03
It's another one of those behind the scenes areas
00:00:07
that not a lot of people know about.
00:00:09
I'm sure you'll appreciate that the big sound effects
00:00:10
are obviously put in later like Kong roaring
00:00:13
and aeroplanes and that stuff.
00:00:15
But what you may not be aware of is every tiny,
00:00:17
little, subtle sound effect is also added in.
00:00:20
And a lot of these are done by the Foley artists.
00:00:23
Foley is actually named after a fella by the name of Jack Foley
00:00:31
who started the whole process of putting sound effects
00:00:35
in sync with pictures.
00:00:39
Foley is basically replacing every human movement
00:00:40
that happens in a film.
00:00:44
Actors do what's called ADR and they replace their dialogue
00:00:46
and then we go into a sound recording studio
00:00:49
and recreate everything that you see.
00:00:51
So we've got our footsteps,
00:00:54
we've got people drinking cups of tea.
00:00:56
Doors closing, people having meals, knives and forks.
00:00:59
On Kong there's a big boat called The Venture
00:01:02
so everything that happens on the boat we recreate.
00:01:05
All of the stuff going thrown overboard
00:01:08
like every single crate landing in the ocean,
00:01:10
they're all done individually.
00:01:13
Very nice, thank you.
00:01:16
We were lucky we were able to get a lot of the original props.
00:01:19
The big old baskets, the cages, old wooden crates.
00:01:22
We've got things off of The Venture itself
00:01:25
that's only just parked down at the wharf here.
00:01:27
We've got all the rigging, the pulleys and things
00:01:29
because that's swinging around in the storm
00:01:31
and that'll be hitting the side of the boat.
00:01:33
We'll be doing all their coats separately
00:01:35
because they've got these big heavy weatherproof coats.
00:01:38
You name it.
00:01:41
You've got everything including the kitchen sink.
00:01:42
So the process is that we work to the picture,
00:01:44
we have our own screen in the room.
00:01:46
You have to be in character pretty much,
00:01:48
take on that character,
00:01:50
especially when you're walking the feet through.
00:01:52
So you really have to take on their mannerisms,
00:01:54
their weight changes.
00:01:56
So it's sort of like a little dance, I suppose.
00:01:58
So what we're doing is we're doing all the hands on the guns
00:02:03
and then we'll do gun on wood and then gun straps
00:02:08
and then gun rattles.
00:02:12
So you do layers and layers and layers of sounds
00:02:13
just to make one element.
00:02:15
Here we go.
00:02:17
They've got to convince me.
00:02:19
Oh, that's good.
00:02:26
For Skull Island, where there are the natives,
00:02:28
we wanted to create a different atmosphere there
00:02:31
so we gave them a little signature sound
00:02:33
which is the skulls and beads that were on their necks.
00:02:35
Is it me?
00:02:39
And then there's also the thousands of feet
00:02:41
when they're all trying to sacrifice someone on the island.
00:02:43
All I can say is ouch.
00:02:47
We also wanted to make the island have a known atmosphere
00:02:48
so it sounds different than anywhere else.
00:02:51
So we gave creaking bamboo sticks
00:02:53
and certain things that would give it more of an atmosphere.
00:02:56
And also take it from the dry.
00:03:02
We've just arrived.
00:03:04
Oh, it's nice and sunny.
00:03:05
Wow, this is a deserted island.
00:03:06
To the wet, more intimidating, more violent element of the scene.
00:03:07
This is the remains of all the previous foley artists
00:03:14
that used to work in this room.
00:03:16
It's great fun.
00:03:18
It's challenging.
00:03:19
It's rewarding.
00:03:20
It's hilarious.
00:03:21
You can do your own little thing and do what you want
00:03:22
and at the end of the day you come out with a really good sound.
00:03:24
That's what I like about it.
00:03:28
When you play it all back and it works.
