our solar system our solar system consists of a central star the Sun and 00:00:01
and the eight planets that orbit the Sun. 00:00:36
It is also made of asteroids, moons, comets, and lots more. 00:00:39
The Sun was born in a vast cloud of gas and dust around 5 billion years ago. 00:00:46
Our Sun is not unique in the universe, though. 00:00:53
It is a common middle-sized yellow star, which scientists have named Sol, 00:00:56
after the ancient Roman name. 00:01:01
This is why our system of planets is called the solar system. 00:01:03
There are trillions of other stars in the universe just like it, 00:01:08
and many of these stars have their own systems of planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. 00:01:12
The planet Mercury is the closest of the planets to the Sun. 00:01:19
Because this planet lies so close to the Sun, and as a result somewhat near to Earth, 00:01:24
It is visible to observers on Earth in the late evening or early morning sky. 00:01:31
Because of this, Mercury has been a part of mythology and legend of almost every culture throughout the history of the Earth. 00:01:38
Venus is in many ways Earth's sister planet. 00:01:47
It is almost identical in size, chemistry, gravity, and density as the Earth. 00:01:51
In other words, Venus is made up of almost the exact same types of materials as the Earth, 00:01:56
and in about the same amounts. 00:02:03
Venus has volcanoes, mountains, and sand, just like Earth. 00:02:06
However, Venus is far too hot and has an atmosphere made up of almost entirely carbon dioxide, 00:02:11
which means that no living thing could survive on the planet. 00:02:19
Our planet is an oasis of life in an otherwise desolate universe. 00:02:22
The Earth's temperature, weather, atmosphere, and many other factors are just right to keep us alive. 00:02:28
There are currently over 7 billion people living on the Earth, 00:02:36
and about 30% of the Earth's surface is covered with land, while about the other 70% is covered by oceans. 00:02:40
Mars excites scientists because its mild temperament is more like the Earth's than any of the 00:02:48
other planets. 00:02:56
Evidence suggests that Mars once had rivers, streams, lakes, and even an ocean. 00:02:57
As Mars' atmosphere slowly depleted into outer space, the surface water began to permanently 00:03:04
evaporate. 00:03:10
Today, the only water on Mars is either frozen in polar caps or underground. 00:03:11
Jupiter is by far the largest planet in our solar system. 00:03:20
The Earth could fit inside Jupiter more than 1,000 times. 00:03:24
Jupiter is a very stormy planet. 00:03:29
There are storms found throughout the atmosphere, and most of the storms seem to never end. 00:03:32
The many different cloud formations and storms in the atmosphere also make Jupiter a very colorful planet. 00:03:38
Saturn is most well known for its rings. 00:03:46
However, it is not the only planet with rings. 00:03:49
The rings are not solid, but rather are made up of particles of ice, dust, and rocks. 00:03:52
The rings are held in place around Saturn by the moons that also orbit this large planet. 00:03:58
The gravity of these moons also cause the gaps that are seen between the rings. 00:04:04
Uranus has 27 moons. 00:04:11
Five of these moons are large and the rest are smaller. 00:04:14
The largest moon is called Titana. 00:04:17
Like Jupiter and Saturn, Uranus is a gas giant, but Uranus is a little different. 00:04:20
Unlike all the other planets, and most of the moons in our solar system, Uranus spins 00:04:27
on its side. 00:04:32
Not much was known about planet Neptune until it was visited by the spacecraft Voyager 2 00:04:35
on August 25, 1989. 00:04:41
Voyager 2 took many pictures of the planet, 00:04:44
and much of what we know today about Neptune 00:04:47
came from this single visit. 00:04:49
These pictures show a brilliant blue planet 00:04:52
with a few thin white clouds laced around its surface. 00:04:54
