Hello there. We're going to work on the very last part of your grammar 00:00:00
contents in this course. We're going to start by working on something called digital detox, 00:00:07
which is in your book on page, let me check, it's 148 and 149. Okay, so 00:00:15
So while watching this video, make sure you have your book with you and I will ask you 00:00:28
to stop the video and do some exercises, okay? 00:00:37
So the first thing is we're going to work on some vocabulary that you are supposed to 00:00:41
be very familiar with. 00:00:46
There you have vocabulary on electronic devices. 00:00:49
are supposed to match the words with the photos and I'm going to play the 00:00:53
recording you're going to listen and check the words okay 9.9 to an adapter 00:01:00
4. A charger. 5. A keyboard. 1. A memory stick. 13. A mouse. 6. A plug. 8. A printer. 10. 00:01:13
A remote control 00:01:41
A router 00:01:46
A socket 00:01:50
A speaker 00:01:55
A switch 00:01:59
A USB cable 00:02:04
Okay. 00:02:06
So, now you may stop the video. 00:02:10
And do the next exercise, which is matching the phrasal verbs, a-j, with the sentences. 00:02:14
And look at this, how they are linked. 00:02:24
Switch it off, delete it, update it. 00:02:27
OK, so stop the video, do the exercise, and I will play the recording again. 00:02:31
9.10 00:02:44
H. I changed the heating from 20 degrees to 18 degrees. 00:02:47
OK, so look how it pronounces changed. 00:02:55
I turned it down. 00:03:02
2. F. 00:03:05
I disconnected my printer from the computer. I unplugged it. 00:03:08
Unplugged it. See, it goes all together. 00:03:15
3. D. I made the volume on the TV louder. I turned it up. 00:03:20
4. A. I pressed the off button on the TV. I switched it off. 00:03:30
5. G. I programmed the alarm on my phone for 7.30. I set it. 00:03:39
6. I 00:03:47
I put my phone charger into a socket. I plugged it in. 00:03:52
7. J 00:03:59
I pressed the on button on my laptop. I switched it on. 00:04:01
8. C 00:04:08
I got the latest version of an app. I updated it. 00:04:10
9. E 00:04:18
I put antivirus software on my computer. I installed it. 00:04:20
10. B. 00:04:28
I removed a photo I didn't like. I deleted it. 00:04:31
OK. So, take your time and go again over this to learn this vocabulary and especially these phrasal verbs 00:04:39
and how they're used in the past and how the linking of the pronunciation is made. 00:04:48
So, then we have this listening and speaking on detox. 00:04:56
And you have this text that I would like you to read. 00:05:04
I'm going to read it for you. 00:05:08
And first, I want you to think if you're addicted to your phone, 00:05:11
How many times an hour do you look at your phone and what for? 00:05:15
So stop the video and think about it. 00:05:21
OK, I'm going to read this for you. 00:05:25
Less time online. 00:05:37
Millions of Britons take digital detox. 00:05:39
Taking a break from technology is on the rise. 00:05:44
According to a recent study by Ofcom, the UK Office of Communications, 00:05:47
More and more young people are phone stacking when they go out for a coffee or a meal, 00:05:52
putting their phones in the middle of the table and agreeing not to look at them. 00:05:59
The first person who looks at their phone pays the bill. 00:06:05
34% of internet users have taken a break from their devices in the last 12 months. 00:06:10
This break was usually for no more than a day, though some people took a break of a week or even a month. 00:06:20
The under 25s are most likely to unplug. 00:06:29
Feedback from these digital detoxers is very positive. 00:06:37
Less than 33% said they got more done in their lives when they weren't online. And 21% said they 00:06:42
enjoyed life more. Only 8% found the experience stressful. Okay, so this is the text on digital 00:06:55
detox and okay since you have the the app you can listen to this okay I would 00:07:08
like you to check and go to this part which is about quantifiers okay and to 00:07:20
do that before we do that better said I would like you to go to your grammar 00:07:33
bank and in this lesson we're going to work on quantifiers and you see you've 00:07:39
got three types of quantifiers large quantities that is when we talk about 00:07:46
words like a lot of lots of loads of or a lot many much and plenty of okay small 00:07:54
quantities, little, a little, a few, very little, very few, less, fewer. When, OK, so 00:08:07
there you have. We're going to listen to this and see how it's pronounced and when it is 00:08:21
used. 00:08:28
9.15 00:08:29
1. My daughter has a lot of apps on her phone. 00:08:31
Nina has lots of clothes. 00:08:36
I've been there loads of times. 00:08:43
James eats a lot. 00:08:47
There aren't many cafes near here. 00:08:52
Do you have many close friends? 00:08:57
Do you watch much TV? 00:08:59
I don't eat much chocolate. 00:09:05
Don't run. We have plenty of time. 00:09:09
Okay. So, when working on this, you have to remember what you studied about countable and uncountable nouns. 00:09:13
So, we use a lot of, lots of, loads of, okay, in positive sentences. 00:09:24
But lots of and loads is more informal. 00:09:33
Now, what you cannot say is a lot of without a noun, no? 00:09:38
He talks a lot. He drinks a lot. He drinks a lot of beer. 00:09:43
But he drinks a lot of is not correct. 00:09:49
Very half, much, many. 00:09:53
Okay, many cafes. 00:09:56
That means that you can count the cafes, the places. 00:09:58
And do you watch much TV? 00:10:01
TV in general is uncountable. 00:10:04
Okay, do you eat much chocolate? 00:10:07
or many chocolate pieces, okay? 00:10:10
And we have plenty of time. 00:10:16
Now, you normally have no problem with this. 00:10:19
What you have problem with is with small quantities, 00:10:22
with a little and a few, right? 00:10:26
So, little is for uncountable and few for countable nouns, okay? 00:10:29
So, let's listen. 00:10:36
9.16 00:10:37
1. Do you want some more ice cream? 00:10:39
Just a little. 00:10:44
The town only has a few cinemas. 00:10:47
2. I'm so busy that I have very little time for myself. 00:10:51
Sarah isn't popular and she has very few friends. 00:10:58
3. I have less free time than I used to have. 00:11:05
4. There are fewer flights in the winter than in the summer. 00:11:09
Okay. There you are. A little for uncountable. Less. Okay. And few for countable. Few is 00:11:17
a comparative of few. Okay. Less is a comparative of little, of course. So, this is large and 00:11:35
small quantities. And here you have, I don't think that you have seen this before, when 00:11:45
to use too. Too, OK? Meaning demasiado, OK? So, we're going to listen. 00:11:52
Nine point seventeen. One. 00:12:01
I don't like this city. It's too big and it's too noisy. 00:12:05
Too big, demasiado grande, too noisy. 00:12:09
OK, you see? 00:12:14
So, too and an adjective. 00:12:15
Too big, too noisy. 00:12:18
You're speaking too quietly. 00:12:23
I can't hear you. 00:12:25
OK? 00:12:27
Too quietly, in this case, this is an adverb. 00:12:27
So, too goes with adjectives and adverbs. 00:12:31
Too. 00:12:40
There's too much traffic and too much noise. 00:12:40
There are too many tourists and too many cars. 00:12:47
OK, so again, we have to remember countable and uncountable nouns. 00:12:51
Too much goes with uncountable nouns. 00:12:57
You cannot count noise. 00:13:01
Too much noise, too much traffic. 00:13:03
You can count cars. 00:13:06
Too many cars. 00:13:08
In this case, too many tourists, too many cars. 00:13:09
So, this is demasiado. 00:13:14
And now, we'll cut enough. 00:13:17
Enough. 00:13:21
Enough. 00:13:23
Three. 00:13:25
There aren't enough parks and there aren't enough trees. 00:13:27
Enough parks, enough trees. 00:13:32
That is, enough, suficientes, bastantes. 00:13:35
And the noun. OK? 00:13:40
The buses aren't frequent enough. 00:13:45
The buses don't run frequently enough. 00:13:49
OK. Bus. If you're using enough with an adjective or an adverb, the adjective or the adverb goes before. 00:13:52
Frequent enough. You don't say enough frequent. Frequent enough. 00:14:03
OK. That's finished. 00:14:14
And finally, what is called zero quantity, right? 00:14:15
9.18 00:14:23
1. There isn't any milk in the fridge. We don't have any eggs. 00:14:24
OK, so in Spanish we don't use this. We say, 00:14:34
No hay leche en el frigorífico y no tenemos huevos. OK? 00:14:39
Two. There's no milk in the fridge. We have no eggs. 00:14:43
OK. So, you could say, there isn't any milk or there is no milk. 00:14:56
Careful, you don't say there is not milk because if you use not with T, then you have to say any. OK? 00:15:03
Three. How many eggs do we have? 00:15:15
None. I've used them all. 00:15:18
None. Ninguno. Nada. 00:15:23
OK. So, stop the video 00:15:26
and I'm going to show you 00:15:30
the answers to the grammar exercises and then 00:15:34
I will record a little bit more in a different video to carry 00:15:38
on working with this. OK. So, stop the video 00:15:42
and check the answers okay so this was the first part of quantifiers we will 00:15:45
carry on working on this in our next video bye 00:16:26
