Gender inequality is discrimination on the basis of sex or gender, causing one sex or gender to be routinely privileged or prioritized over another. 00:00:08
Treatment toward women in the music and cinematographic industries has shown some improvement but still has a long way to go. 00:00:16
Both continue to be male-dominated industries. 00:00:22
Regarding the music industry, to the average listener, this may not seem to be the case, as they might see lots of female artists at the top of the charts. 00:00:25
However, when you look at the data, you'll see that women are seriously being left out of the equation across the industry. 00:00:32
As a cinematographic industry, discrimination towards women is more striking in the gender pay gap. 00:00:38
Despite all the differences that we could continue to highlight, in our presentation we've decided to talk about the sexist questions that female celebrities receive at interviews. 00:00:44
Firstly, Taylor Swift did an interview for an Australian radio station after releasing one of her albums in 1999. 00:00:54
Oh, you know, like, she just writes songs about her ex-boyfriends, and I think, frankly, that's a very sexist angle to take. 00:01:04
No one says that about Ed Sheeran. 00:01:11
No one says that about Bruno Mars. 00:01:12
They're all writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life, and no one raises a red flag there. 00:01:14
It's true. 00:01:21
As we have seen in this video, Taylor expresses her displeasure towards how similar lyrics about feelings and relationships in different songs are perceived differently 00:01:22
according to whether they are written by men or women. 00:01:31
When written by men, people tend to praise them for their hard work, 00:01:35
while a woman is labeled as crazy and dramatic. 00:01:38
This is because in our society, those men who have lots of relationships 00:01:41
are seen as successful and charismatic. 00:01:45
Meanwhile, we criticize women for doing just the same thing. 00:01:48
In this next video, we are going to see questions that are totally out of context at music awards, 00:01:52
with the examples of Rihanna and Taylor Swift. 00:01:58
What are you looking for in a man now? 00:02:01
I'm not looking for a man. 00:02:03
Let's start there. 00:02:05
You're going to walk home with more than maybe just a trophy tonight. 00:02:07
I think lots of men. 00:02:10
I'm not going to walk home with any men tonight. 00:02:11
I'm going to go hang out with my friends and then I go home to the cats. 00:02:13
In this case, we can see how both Brianna and Taylor Swift are as about men rather than being as about their music careers 00:02:17
or congratulated for winning or being nominated for their hard work. 00:02:23
It looks like society only wants to meddle in celebrities' private lives, especially in women's, as if our value depended on having an amazing man by our side. 00:02:27
It shows how society has taught us that men and women are meant to be together, as we consider this type of nosy questions as something normal to ask. 00:02:36
In this next video, we'll see a fragment of an interview made to Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner to promote the movie The Avengers. 00:02:46
Now, were you able to wear undergarments? 00:02:55
You're like the fifth person that's asking that question. 00:02:58
Well, no, because it – 00:03:00
What is going on? 00:03:01
What – since when did people start asking each other about – in interviews about their 00:03:02
underwear? 00:03:06
No, because it is such a skin-tight – here's why. 00:03:07
I'll leave it up to your imagination. 00:03:09
Oh, see. 00:03:11
Okay? 00:03:12
Is that – 00:03:13
Whatever you feel like I should be wearing or not wearing under that costume. 00:03:14
This is not a – 00:03:16
Is what I – 00:03:17
Well, is it inappropriate? 00:03:18
To ask somebody what kind of underpants they wear? 00:03:19
I didn't ask you what kind. 00:03:22
You just asked me if I was wearing any. 00:03:23
Could you? 00:03:25
No, what do you wear underneath? 00:03:26
Could you? 00:03:27
He's a – 00:03:28
Do you wear clothes? 00:03:29
You wear dungarees. 00:03:30
No, you can't wear clothes under it. 00:03:32
It's like a wetsuit. 00:03:33
Okay. 00:03:35
Practically. 00:03:36
So you answered my question. 00:03:36
Well, I don't know. 00:03:37
Maybe it's a little bit more than a wetsuit. 00:03:38
Was I wearing underwear? 00:03:40
I mean, gosh. 00:03:41
Ask Joss. 00:03:43
I did. 00:03:44
I did ask him. 00:03:46
You asked Joss what kind of underwear he wears? 00:03:46
No, no, no. 00:03:48
What kind of interview is this? 00:03:50
Although now we can be horrified by these types of questions, 00:03:52
they have been asked more times than we can imagine. 00:03:56
No one would ever think of asking about other people's underwear, so why do we normalize these kinds of uncomfortable questions? 00:03:59
Scarlett Johansson has suffered this type of discrimination more than once. 00:04:06
In her interviews, she is commonly asked about the diet she follows and the clothes she wears, 00:04:10
while her peers are asked really interesting questions related to their acting careers. 00:04:15
In this next interview, we are going to hear a really nosy question asked to Keira Knightley after she had just won an award. 00:04:21
in case you haven't heard it the question was how do you balance your 00:04:36
career with having a personal life this question may not strike us as 00:04:43
completely sexist especially coming from another woman 00:04:47
however some assume that a woman belongs in a household and that enjoying 00:04:50
professional bliss would therefore make them too busy to 00:04:53
perform the household duties usually ascribed to their gender as we 00:04:56
have seen on many occasions it is always the woman who receives 00:05:00
questions about how she combines her work with childcare, although it is not a task 00:05:03
that belongs only to the female gender. 00:05:08
We have such an internalized concept of motherhood that when we see something out of the ordinary 00:05:10
we tend to criticize it. 00:05:15
Overall, even though society's mindset has changed over the years, as we have just shown 00:05:17
you, there are still some aspects to improve. 00:05:23
Machism and sexism both persist in our subconscious as a legacy of past ideologies, which is why 00:05:25
we normalize demeaning attitudes towards women. In the cinematographic music industries, women 00:05:31
still suffer from gender discrimination. Society still objectifies them, giving them only a sexual 00:05:36
or maternal image, not allowing them to develop as professionals in their respective careers. 00:05:43
Their value is reduced to a mere image, since society demands more from them than from anyone. 00:05:48
We have chosen to reflect this issue from the point of view of celebrities because they are 00:05:54
influential people who are important enough to fight against these injustices, as we have seen 00:05:59
in the videos. Not until an issue is voiced publicly is there an attempt to eradicate it. 00:06:04
