What are civil rights? What do they protect us from?
In the modern world, our social coexistence is organized in nations, countries that are governed by the state.
00:00:01
What is the state?
00:00:11
The state is the institution that exercises power in a certain territory, in the territory of a nation, of a country.
00:00:12
For example, the Spanish state is the institution that controls and exercises power in Spain.
00:00:20
The state needs to be powerful in order to provide services for the citizens, for example schools, hospitals, etc.
00:00:28
But it is also dangerous when the state is too powerful because it can have the temptation of violating people's rights and freedoms.
00:00:37
This is something that frequently happened in the past.
00:00:47
For example, during totalitarian regimes like Nazism or Stalinism that invaded people's privacy and didn't respect people's rights.
00:00:50
In order to prevent that from happening again, the International Declaration of Human Rights establishes a lot of civil rights.
00:01:01
What are civil rights?
00:01:10
Civil rights are the limits that the International Declaration of Human Rights sets what the state can do.
00:01:12
There are certain things that nobody can ever do to you, not even the state.
00:01:23
Some things that are forbidden, and these things that are forbidden grant that you can be free.
00:01:28
So these freedoms are your civil rights.
00:01:35
Let's see an example.
00:01:39
As you know, one of the most important human rights
00:01:42
is the right to life.
00:01:44
The right to life means that nobody can kill you.
00:01:46
Nobody, no matter what happens.
00:01:50
This means that not even the government,
00:01:52
not even the state can kill you, no matter what you did.
00:01:54
So your right to life comes from a limit
00:01:59
to what the government can do to you.
00:02:03
Other civil rights, the right to free movement.
00:02:06
You can go wherever you want,
00:02:09
meaning that nobody can stop you from going anywhere, not even the government.
00:02:10
Or the right to free marriage.
00:02:15
You can marry freely the person you are in love with
00:02:17
without anyone stopping you from doing that, not even the state.
00:02:20
The right to private property.
00:02:26
Nobody can stop you from having your own things.
00:02:28
Or the right to free expression and free conscience.
00:02:31
Please beware that these are two different rights.
00:02:36
The right to free conscience means that you can think whatever you want.
00:02:39
You can have your own ideas, you can have your own religion, you can have your own political orientation.
00:02:43
And nobody can stop you from practicing your religion, for example, not even the government.
00:02:49
The right to free speech is different.
00:02:56
It's the right to freely express your ideas, to communicate what you think to other people,
00:02:58
for example, writing in newspapers or using social networks.
00:03:03
These important freedoms, these important liberties, include also the right to a nationality.
00:03:10
This might seem unimportant at first, but in fact it is very relevant.
00:03:16
The right to have a nationality is very, very relevant,
00:03:22
because if you don't have a nationality, there is no country, there is no state that can protect your rights.
00:03:26
So if anyone violates you, you have no instance to go to to defend your rights.
00:03:34
Freedoms are also important in political rights.
00:03:41
Political rights are those rights that protect our participation in society.
00:03:47
They include, for example, the freedom to meet other people and create your associations or political parties, for example, to protest in the streets, in a demonstration.
00:03:52
and the right to vote and to live in a democracy.
