Good afternoon, and welcome back to The Great Escape. 00:00:00
Today we're going to be talking about fractured fairy tales. 00:00:04
And you might be asking yourself, well, what is a fractured fairy tale? 00:00:08
And I hope that this egg imagery will help you understand what it is. 00:00:13
A fractured fairy tale is taking an egg, which is a complete fairy tale, 00:00:18
breaking it, scrambling it, and trying to put it back together a la Humpty Dumpty. 00:00:24
And it's all for comedic effect. 00:00:29
So what are the ways that we can fracture a fairy tale? 00:00:31
Well, through subversion of expectations. 00:00:35
They expect one thing and we give them the exact opposite. 00:00:37
Maybe by saying one thing but meaning another, like an irony. 00:00:41
Doing something completely unbelievable, crazy, absurd. 00:00:45
Or by exaggerating, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, as you've seen in other units with hyperbole. 00:00:51
So the original fractured fairy tales are from, like, 1959. 00:01:00
That's the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, something my parents used to watch when they were kids. 00:01:04
And we're going to see an example. 00:01:09
And this example is called Leaping Beauty. 00:01:11
Now, this is a play on words. 00:01:14
You know that leaping means jumping. 00:01:16
So the fractured fairy tale is going to have to do something with jumping. 00:01:18
And what does leaping beauty sound like? 00:01:22
Well, it sounds like sleeping beauty. 00:01:24
So that's going to be the fairy tale that gets fractured. 00:01:26
I would like you to watch this YouTube video after the presentation 00:01:29
to see the way that Rocky and Bullwinkle fractured Sleeping Beauty. 00:01:32
And then, of course, they're not the only ones who fractured fairy tales. 00:01:36
From 1993, we have this book, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. 00:01:40
And the title character is based on the gingerbread man. 00:01:45
So we'll see the funny way that that story has been changed also. 00:01:48
And others within the Stinky Cheese Man collection, like the princess and the bowling ball. 00:01:51
So in addition to these things, you're also going to have to do a presentation project 00:01:56
that I have put on xLearning with a fairy tale that I have fractured. 00:02:01
And after everything, it will be your turn. 00:02:07
I will ask you to go to Classroom and find out which group you've been placed in with other classmates 00:02:11
and which fairy tale you've been assigned. 00:02:16
Then you'll need to click and read your fairy tale to get familiar with it. 00:02:18
And tomorrow in class, you'll meet with your group members 00:02:22
and talk about what happened in that fairy tale. 00:02:25
Start getting some ideas on how to fracture it. 00:02:28
All right, so see you tomorrow. Thanks a lot. 00:02:31
