How to form the future using will and the first conditional

Descargar la transcripción

Hello, we are going to study the use of the future simple tense and the first conditional using will. 00:00:01
Let's start with the statements in the affirmative as the following example 00:00:09
Sheila will pass all her exams next June 00:00:15
or in the negative Sheila will not pass all his exams next June. 00:00:18
We have want between brackets because it is the contraction of will not. 00:00:25
In the following slide, we are going to see will with the different subjects. 00:00:31
And as we can see, will doesn't change in spite of the subjects. 00:00:36
In the negative, we use the contraction won't, and it doesn't change with the different subjects neither. 00:00:43
Let's see the formation of gestural questions using will and short answers. 00:00:54
In this example, what we see is that will is placed before the subject. 00:01:00
And then we have the short answers, affirmative or negative. 00:01:07
Yes, you will. No, you won't. 00:01:12
In the following examples, we'll see that the structure of the question goes as in the first example. 00:01:13
So we write will before the subject when we are asking yes or no questions. 00:01:23
and then how we answer those questions using will in the affirmative or want in the negative. 00:01:29
In the following slide, we are going to highlight that we can either say will or write will when we are using the future simple, 00:01:36
or we can use will contraction, which is how it is pronounced when we are using spoken English, 00:01:47
or how we contract will not using want. 00:01:57
Now let's move to explain the different uses of will 00:02:05
when we are using the future simple. 00:02:09
We use will to express certain decision in a conversation 00:02:12
as in the following one. 00:02:16
A says, there isn't any milk left in the fridge 00:02:18
and B replies, don't worry, I'll get some in the supermarket. 00:02:21
So we are using will in this conversation without any previous plan. 00:02:26
We can also use will to express promises, as in this example. 00:02:34
I'll call you back when I get to the hotel. 00:02:40
And we can also use will to make predictions about the future. 00:02:44
And then we use adverbs of possibility and probability. 00:02:49
In this example, what we can see is that the prediction about the future is not certain or sure. 00:02:53
That's why we can add adverbs such as probably or possibly to express that meaning. 00:03:00
People will have few children in 10 years means that perhaps they will, but we don't know. 00:03:10
And that uncertainty is also expressed in the following examples. 00:03:16
I think she'll probably get pregnant next year or Mark will possibly come to the party tomorrow. 00:03:22
Let's now explain how to form the first conditional. 00:03:30
It is important to point out that we are using will in this type of conditional. 00:03:34
If we look at the example, my sister will start university next year if she passes all her subjects in June. 00:03:45
As we can see in the first part of this sentence, we have will expressing the future simple tense. 00:03:52
And then we have the condition written in the present simple. 00:04:02
We can also change the order of the elements of this sentence so that we place the condition first 00:04:08
and then we write it using the present simple tense and then we use the future simple tense 00:04:16
after a comma. So we have in these two examples the following. My sister will start university 00:04:24
next year if she passes all her subjects in June or if my sister passes all her subjects in June 00:04:32
she will start university next year. We can also use all the connectors with these first 00:04:39
conditional, unless, which means if not, and when, which has a temporal meaning. Unless you study 00:04:46
harder, you'll fail the next exam, means if you don't study harder, you'll fail. When I finish 00:04:53
my homework tonight, I'll see a movie at home. The use of the first conditional is to talk about 00:05:00
actions or events in the future which are likely to happen or have a real possibility of happening. 00:05:10
Let's see the following examples. 00:05:16
If I miss my train, I tell you the next one. 00:05:17
Peter will call you if he arrives late tonight. 00:05:20
So these are examples of this first conditional using will. 00:05:24
Thank you very much for listening. 00:05:30
