Hello guys! 00:00:01
Today we’re going to be learning about Relative Clauses:
Hello guys!
00:00:02
Today we’re going to be learning about Relative Clauses: 00:00:02
Defining and Non-defining 00:00:04
So, welcome to this class, and ENJOY! 00:00:07
But before we start, remember to listen, take notes, 00:00:11
and ask your questions if you have any doubts. 00:00:15
So, what are we going to learn? 00:00:18
We’re going to revise your relative Pronouns, 00:00:21
identify Relative Clauses, 00:00:23
and distinguish between Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses. 00:00:25
So, let’s watch this video, and take notes while you’re watching! 00:00:30
Now, what are the differences 00:00:36
between the Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses? 00:00:38
In Defining Relative Clauses we find that 00:00:41
they don’t go between commas 00:00:44
because they give us essential information. 00:00:46
We can omit the pronoun 00:00:49
if the word that comes next to it is not a verb. 00:00:51
In Non-defining Relative Clauses we find that 00:00:56
they go between commas, 00:00:59
they give us extra information, 00:01:00
we cannot omit the pronoun, 00:01:02
and we can’t use the pronoun “that”. 00:01:05
Let’s practice a little bit! 00:01:08
Are these Defining or Non-defining Relative Clauses? 00:01:10
“My dog, who is fat and old, likes sleeping on my bed”. 00:01:13
“This is the hospital where my dad works”. 00:01:18
“Jane, whose sister is a pilot, lives in London now”. 00:01:21
“I like the dress that Mary is wearing today”. 00:01:25
Let’s continue practising. 00:01:29
Have a look at question number 1 and choose the correct option. 00:01:31
Now, look at question number 2, and rewrite the sentences 00:01:35
using a Relative pronoun and a Relative clause like in the example. 00:01:39
“Matt told me about a shop. He often buys books there”. 00:01:44
So, we would have: 00:01:48
“Matt told me about a shop where he often buys books”. 00:01:49
I can see a bunch of experts now! 00:01:54
But in case you need any extra help, here you’ve got a video 00:01:56
where they explain the Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses, 00:01:59
and also, a website where you can practise as much as you want. 00:02:03
So, just to make sure that 00:02:08
you don’t forget anything about this lesson, 00:02:09
here you’ve got a class recap: 00:02:12
Relative Pronouns: “who/that” for people, 00:02:13
“which/that” for objects, 00:02:16
“whose”: possession, 00:02:19
“where”: place, 00:02:20
“when”: time, 00:02:22
“why”: reason, 00:02:24
An example of a Defining Relative Clause would be 00:02:25
“I like the dress that or which Mary is wearing today” 00:02:28
And an example of a Non-Defining: 00:02:32
“My dog, who is fat and old, likes sleeping on my bed”. 00:02:34
Bye! 00:02:38
