The prehistoric Iberian peoples of Spain built megalithic structures, towns, and cities. 00:00:09
Much of their culture is shrouded in mystery. 00:00:16
Beginning in the 11th or 12th century BC, 00:00:19
Phoenician merchants from modern-day Lebanon began trading with the Iberians 00:00:22
and would eventually build colonies along Iberia's eastern and southern coasts. 00:00:28
They would come into contact with the civilization of Tartessos, 00:00:32
who would be famed throughout the Mediterranean, 00:00:37
for their wealth in tin, copper, and gold. 00:00:39
The Phoenicians, who were the renowned seafarers and merchants of their day, 00:00:43
came under ever-increasing pressure from the growth of the Assyrian Empire. 00:00:48
To escape the Assyrians, and later the Persians, 00:00:53
many Phoenicians opted to leave home and colonize the western Mediterranean. 00:00:56
Their greatest city would be Carthage, 00:01:01
which would one day dominate all the other Phoenician colonies. 00:01:04
During this time, Rome was just a regional power struggling to gain control of their Italian neighbors. 00:01:08
To the east of Rome, the ever-squabbling Greek city-states managed to colonize the area around the Black Sea, 00:01:14
the coast of modern-day Libya, Sicily, Italy, southern France, and also the northeast coast of Spain. 00:01:22
Originating near modern-day Hallstatt, Austria, Celtic culture and people would spread as far east as modern-day Turkey 00:01:29
into northern europe and also into spain here the native iberian tribes incorporated elements 00:01:36
of celtic phoenician and greek society into their own these extremely warlike people would develop 00:01:45
a sophisticated culture and a variety of writing forms influenced by celtic greek and phoenician 00:01:52
The Iberian Peninsula was rich in tin and copper that needed alloy to create bronze, 00:02:02
as well as gold, silver, and iron. 00:02:08
These metals were the crude oil of the ancient world, fueling civilized society, 00:02:11
needed for everything from construction tools, agricultural equipment, weapons and armor to currency. 00:02:16
By the 3rd century BC, the city-state of Carthage had become an empire, 00:02:22
consolidating much of the western Mediterranean under its control. 00:02:27
After a long series of wars, Rome would unite the Italian peninsula. 00:02:31
Rome would then set its sights on Carthage. 00:02:37
And after a series of three wars, known as the Punic Wars, Rome was triumphant. 00:02:40
It took many hard-fought campaigns for Rome to absorb Carthage's Iberian territory. 00:02:47
It would take Rome more than 200 years to fully subdue the entire Iberian peninsula. 00:02:53
On my next video on Spain, I will be focusing on the Roman conquest of Spain, Roman Spain, and the collapse of the Roman Empire. 00:03:00
