Cuentacuentos grabado por uno de nuestros Language Assistants por el Día Internacional del Libro
Hey, hi, it's me, Teacher John. How are you guys today?
00:00:04
I hope you all are good during the quarantine.
00:00:10
I know it's hard to stay inside, but it's what we have to do to make sure everyone's healthy.
00:00:14
And I know that we're not at school together, but today is International Book Day.
00:00:19
And I wanted to share my favorite story with you from when I was a child.
00:00:26
The name of the story is The Elves and the Shoemaker.
00:00:32
So here we go.
00:00:39
There once was a shoemaker.
00:00:44
Do you know what a shoemaker is?
00:00:46
Yeah, a shoemaker is a person who makes shoes.
00:00:50
So, there once was a shoemaker who, through no fault of his own, had become so poor that one day he had only enough materials for one last pair of shoes.
00:00:54
That evening, he cut the shoes which he was going to make the next morning.
00:01:11
And since he was a very healthy man, he brushed his teeth, he laid down quietly, and he went to sleep.
00:01:17
Now, in the morning, after brushing his teeth and eating breakfast, he was preparing to sit down to work.
00:01:26
And he found the pair of shoes already finished sitting on the table.
00:01:34
He was amazed. He couldn't understand how the shoes were already completed.
00:01:40
He took the shoes in his hand to examine them very closely.
00:01:47
They were perfectly sewn and stitched and hammered.
00:01:52
Not a stitch was out of place, and it was as if they were made by a professional.
00:01:58
Soon after, a customer came into his store and fell in love with the shoes that were made last night.
00:02:05
He even paid more than the ordinary price for them.
00:02:15
This made the shoemaker very, very happy because now he can buy enough leather and materials for two pairs of new shoes.
00:02:19
That evening, he cut out the new shoes, and the next day, with great excitement to go back to work, he didn't need that excitement, for when he got up, the shoes were already finished again, and outside his store, there were many customers waiting for his store to open.
00:02:30
They gave him so much money that he was able to buy leather for four pairs of shoes.
00:02:56
Early the next morning, he found the four pairs finished, and so on it went.
00:03:05
What he cut out at evening was finished by the morning, and he still didn't know who or why this was happening.
00:03:12
He only knew that he was making a lot of money, and he became very, very rich.
00:03:22
Now, one evening, not long before Christmas, when he had cut out shoes as usual, he said to his wife,
00:03:32
How about you and I, we sit up tonight and we see who it is that's been helping us.
00:03:42
The wife agreed, lit a candle, and they hid themselves in the corner of the room behind the clothes that were hanging there.
00:03:48
At midnight came two naked little men who sat down at the shoemaker's table and instantly, without speaking,
00:04:00
began working their tiny little fingers to stitch and sew, and also hammer.
00:04:10
They did it so quickly and neatly, the shoemaker could not believe his eyes.
00:04:18
They didn't stop, not even to drink water, until everything was finished.
00:04:25
They stood up on the table, and they quickly ran away.
00:04:31
The next day, the wife said,
00:04:36
These little men have made us so rich.
00:04:39
We ought to show our gratitude.
00:04:43
They run around with nothing on and freeze when it's cold.
00:04:45
Now I will make them little shirts, coats, and I will even knit them socks for their tiny little feet.
00:04:52
You should make them each a pair of shoes.
00:05:01
The husband agreed, and that evening, when everything had been ready,
00:05:04
they laid out the presents on the table and hid themselves to see how the little men would behave.
00:05:09
At midnight, they came skipping in and were about to begin, but instead of finding materials for
00:05:17
them, they found the beautiful little clothes. At first, they were surprised, then excessively
00:05:24
delighted. With the greatest speed, they put on the smoothed-down clothes, singing,
00:05:32
Now we're dressed so fine and neat
00:05:37
Why cobble more for others' feet?
00:05:41
Then they hopped and danced about
00:05:44
They leaped over the chairs
00:05:47
And jumped out the window
00:05:49
Since that night they came back no more
00:05:52
But the shoemaker and his wife
00:05:57
Lived happily ever after
