Hello everybody, today we are going to talk about time prepositions.
00:00:01
Okay, we are going to talk about three main time prepositions that are
00:00:05
at, on, and in.
00:00:11
We are going to start with the uses of at.
00:00:17
So the first use of at is with a specific time.
00:00:21
Let's see an example.
00:00:26
She arrived at 9 o'clock.
00:00:27
They finish school at 2 o'clock
00:00:29
Or the movie starts at dinner time
00:00:33
Okay, so 9 o'clock, 2 o'clock or dinner time are specific times
00:00:35
Okay, specific moment
00:00:42
So the preposition that goes before that is always at
00:00:45
The second use of at is with a holiday period
00:00:51
For example, they sing carols at Christmas or it's much fun hunting eggs at Easter.
00:00:57
Christmas and Easter are holiday periods.
00:01:06
It's not a day only, it's a period, a number of days that is that holiday period.
00:01:09
Okay?
00:01:17
Now we go to the uses of on.
00:01:18
The first use of on is with days of the week.
00:01:21
for example they will go back to school on monday or i visit my grandma on saturdays
00:01:24
okay monday saturdays days of the week so the preposition that goes with it is on
00:01:32
and then the other use of on or the other or when we use on is with dates example
00:01:40
For example, on October 22nd I'm going to Cuba, on Christmas Day we have lunch with all the family, and my birthday is on the 5th of June.
00:01:49
Notice in these examples, Christmas Day.
00:02:01
So the difference between using at or on with Christmas, as we see, is that in the previous one, when we used at, we referred to a period.
00:02:07
not to an specific day of Christmas, okay?
00:02:19
In this case, we use on because we are referring to a specific day of Christmas,
00:02:25
so it's a date.
00:02:31
That's why we use on.
00:02:33
And now let's see the uses of in.
00:02:35
The first use of in is for months.
00:02:38
So remember, on, for days of the week, in, for months of the year.
00:02:41
school finishes in June her birthday is in August okay we also use in with years
00:02:48
okay so we would say we will say he started working for the company in 1999
00:03:00
Shakespeare was born in 1564 we also use it for decades so we have in plus the
00:03:06
decade example life was different in the 80s i was born in the 70s okay so of course 80s so
00:03:17
or 70s also for centuries in plus the plus century we are living in the 21st century
00:03:29
or it was destroyed in the 19th century.
00:03:39
Also for seasons, the time preposition that we use is in.
00:03:44
They go skiing in winter.
00:03:51
She was born in summer.
00:03:54
And finally, with a time period.
00:03:56
Example, the class finishes in 30 minutes.
00:04:04
The play starts in 4 hours.
00:04:07
Notice again the difference because we had at.
00:04:11
So if I say the class begins at 9 o'clock, I'm talking about a specific time.
00:04:14
No?
00:04:24
So therefore I used at.
00:04:25
Here we are talking about a time period, 30 minutes or 4 hours.
00:04:27
so we use in because it refers to all that time
00:04:35
all those 30 minutes or the whole 4 hours
00:04:40
ok, and well, that's all about time prepositions
00:04:46
I hope you understood
00:04:51
and now of course you can go and do some exercises
00:04:53
bye bye
