Communication between two neurons begins when an electrical impulse, called an action potential,
00:00:00
travels along the axon of a presynaptic neuron toward the axon terminal.
00:00:05
The action potential cannot cross the synaptic space.
00:00:11
When it reaches the axon terminal, it causes membranous sacs, called vesicles,
00:00:14
to move toward the membrane of the axon terminal.
00:00:18
The membrane of the vesicle fuses with the membrane of the axon terminal,
00:00:23
enabling the vesicle to release its contents into the synaptic space.
00:00:27
The molecules released from the vesicles are chemicals called neurotransmitters.
00:00:32
They drift across the synaptic space and bind to special proteins,
00:00:36
called receptors, on the postsynaptic neuron.
00:00:40
The binding of a neurotransmitter to its receptor
00:00:45
can trigger an action potential in the postsynaptic neuron.
00:00:48
That electrical signal then moves toward the cell body of the postsynaptic neuron.
00:00:51
Now that the neurotransmitter has relayed its message,
00:00:56
it releases from the receptor into the synaptic space.
00:00:59
Some of the neurotransmitter is degraded by enzymes in the synaptic space,
00:01:04
and some of the neurotransmitter is carried back into the presynaptic neuron
00:01:08
through transporter proteins.
00:01:11
The neurotransmitter that is taken back up into the presynaptic neuron
00:01:16
is then repackaged into vesicles that can be released the next time
00:01:19
an action potential reaches the axon terminal.
00:01:23
The entire process repeats each time an action potential
00:01:28
reaches the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron.
