Hi everybody, today we're going to talk about adjectives. First of all let's see what an 00:00:00
adjective is. Adjectives are the words that are used to describe nouns, that is 00:00:04
to say people, places and things. These descriptive words, adjectives, can give 00:00:09
information about size, shape, opinion, age, color, etc etc. The order of 00:00:17
adjectives. When we have two or more adjectives in a sentence, 00:00:27
we have to remember that we cannot place them randomly. We have to 00:00:33
follow a specific order inside the sentence. You can remember the 00:00:40
order by this acronym, N-O-S-A-S-C-O-M-P, or as a word, NOSASCOMP. Let's see what each of these 00:00:47
letters stand for. N for number, O opinion, S size, A age, the second S shape, C color, 00:00:59
The second O, origin, M for material and P for purpose. Now we are going to look at 00:01:13
each of them separately, okay? So number describes, you see, the number of nouns 00:01:22
that we are talking about, 1, 2, 10, 20. Example, three kids. Opinion, describes 00:01:29
what is thought about the noun, the opinion of the person that is talking. 00:01:38
Examples of opinion adjectives are good, bad, great, beautiful, ugly, delicious, 00:01:44
excellent, boring, interesting. An example in a sentence will be it's an interesting 00:01:52
project. What about size? The size adjective is used to describe how big or 00:01:58
small the noun is. Big, huge, short, small, tiny, little, large. These are examples 00:02:07
of size adjectives and in a sentence we will have for example a tiny house. What 00:02:14
about age? Okay the age adjective will describe how old or young the described 00:02:22
noun is and we have young, old, ancient, teenage, antique, mature, etc. I found an 00:02:28
antique lamp. Shape. Well, as the name says, describes the shape of the noun. 00:02:37
Square, circular, rectangular, curved, flat, and so on. I decided to buy the round 00:02:44
table. Color. Well, easy, describes the color of the noun. Black, grey, blue, orange, 00:02:52
green and so on. Mars is known as the red planet. Origin. Well, it describes where 00:03:00
the noun is from. Divine, volcanic, Spanish, foreign, remote, European. In a 00:03:09
sentence it will be, for example, I love Italian food. Material. It describes what 00:03:16
the noun is made of. Gold, cotton, wool, silk, wooden, plastic. This is a silver, a 00:03:23
silver ring. Purpose. Well, here we describe the use of the noun for running, 00:03:32
for sleeping, for frying, for playing tennis. Example, don't forget your 00:03:41
sleeping bag. Okay, now we are going to see some examples to practice. Okay, so 00:03:47
order the following adjectives to describe the dresses. New black two night 00:03:54
silk. Okay so you will form a sentence with the noun dresses and these five 00:03:59
adjectives. Okay I give you just five seconds to think about it and let's go 00:04:06
and see the answer that hopefully you are correct. Two new black silk night 00:04:16
dresses okay another one order the following adjectives to describe the 00:04:23
cookies and the adjectives that you have are a huge round delicious okay so you 00:04:31
have to put those three adjectives and the word cookies and the noun cookies so 00:04:40
let's see how it turns out. There are delicious huge round cookies. Yes? And 00:04:47
finally, okay, we are going to say a little bit more about adjectives. So the 00:04:58
first thing that we should know is that usually we don't have more than three 00:05:06
adjectives in a sentence, okay? In the first example we gave there were 00:05:12
lots of adjectives but that is not the common thing in 00:05:19
sentences, no? So we usually we are not going to have more than three 00:05:26
adjectives in a sentence. The second thing that you have to know is that 00:05:30
sometimes adjectives can be found out of place when the writer wants to emphasize 00:05:35
something we are not going to do it okay we are just going to use the the normal 00:05:41
the normal way of putting adjectives in a sentence and finally you have to put a 00:05:48
comma after every adjective except after the last one okay now you have some 00:05:57
exercises if you want to practice 00:06:05
