Can you tell me why in maps that are green and brown areas? What do they mean?
00:00:00
That's right, relief! In this video we're going to learn about the different
00:00:14
mountain ranges in the peninsula as well as the most important river basins.
00:00:20
ready? In this map you can see how mountainous Spain is. I'll start with the
00:00:26
inner plateau in pink, then with the mountains surrounding the plateau in
00:00:33
blue and then those mountain ranges beyond in purple. Let's start with the
00:00:37
plateau. If you're wondering what is that, you're lucky! I'll tell you that it's a
00:00:44
land which has a level surface much higher above than the land nearby.
00:00:51
In the middle of the inner plateau, we find the central system.
00:01:01
That is why the plateau is divided.
00:01:05
In the north, the northern sub-plateau and in the south, the southern sub-plateau.
00:01:09
Let's start with the first one, the central system.
00:01:14
a mountain range of approximately 600 km. It's also the natural border between Castilla
00:01:20
León to the north and Madrid-Extremadura and Castilla la Mancha to the south. Its highest
00:01:26
peak is the Pico Almanzor. The central system divides two important river basins, the Duero
00:01:32
to the north and the Tajo to the south.
00:01:38
In the southern sub-plateau, we've got the Mounts of Toledo. They form a mountain range
00:01:43
of around 200 km from west to east, and the same as the central system, the mountains
00:01:49
of Toledo divide two important river basins, the Tagus to the north and the Guadiana to
00:01:56
the south.
00:02:01
Now let's move on to our second group of reliefs, those mountains surrounding the inner
00:02:09
plateau.
00:02:14
The mountains of León are about 2,000 meters high and they separate Castille-León from
00:02:15
Galicia.
00:02:21
The Cantabric Mountain Chain runs parallel to the Cantabric Sea for nearly 500 km.
00:02:23
The peaks of these chains are high and rocked, for example Picos de Europa or Torre Cerrero.
00:02:30
The Iberian system is one of the longest, more than 500 km from northwest to southeast.
00:02:39
Moncayo in the province of Zaragoza is the highest peak. The marina range to the
00:02:49
south does not have a high altitude but it sits as a separation between the
00:02:56
Guadiana and the Guadalquivir river basin. However Sierra Morena is famous
00:03:01
because it appears on one of the chapters of Don Quixote. And now let's go
00:03:07
to the extremes of the peninsula, to those mountain ranges which are not next
00:03:14
to the inner plateau.
00:03:19
The Galician Massif, on the northeast, is formed by low mountains with rounded peaks,
00:03:22
the Mino its most important river.
00:03:27
The Basque Mountains are not high at all, but they serve as a connection between the
00:03:31
Cantabrian mountain chain and the Pyrenees.
00:03:35
Did you know these are the ismo between the peninsula and the rest of the European continent?
00:03:39
They run for 430 km west-east and its highest peak is the Aneto, with more than 3,400 meters
00:03:46
high.
00:03:54
The Ebro is the largest, but not longest, river on the peninsula.
00:03:55
The Catalan coastal chain runs parallel to the Mediterranean coast for over 250 km.
00:04:01
And last but not least, the Vedic system.
00:04:09
It is the longest mountain range in the peninsula, and here you can find the highest peak of
00:04:12
the peninsula, the Molesen.
00:04:17
But careful, because the highest peak in Spain is not in the peninsula, it's in the Canary
00:04:19
Islands, the Teire, with more than 3,500 meters high.
00:04:25
Thank you for watching this video.
00:04:32
Now, if you are not sure about the difference between a cape, a gulf and a bay, a delta,
00:04:33
and many other geographic concepts make sure you watch this video here or if
00:04:39
you're interested in the climate of Spain check this out thank you
