UNICEF's Simon Ingram reports on efforts to raise awareness of the potentially deadly bird flu virus in Egypt.
You're watching UNICEF Television.

A climb to the rooftops hasn't always been a part of Wafaa Ibrahim's daily routine,
00:00:04
but for months now it's been here that she's had to keep her ducks and chickens,
00:00:09
and where she must come to feed and look after them.
00:00:14
Wearing a mask for her face wasn't always necessary either,
00:00:17
nor the careful washing routine that she performs before returning to her apartment below.
00:00:21
But with Egypt increasingly threatened by bird flu virus, Wafaa knows she can take no chances.
00:00:26
The first I heard about avian flu was on television, when there were cases in foreign countries.
00:00:35
Then when I heard it had arrived in Egypt, I started taking precautions of my own accord,
00:00:40
like keeping the birds up here on the roof and making sure the children didn't go near them.
00:00:47
The additional hygiene precautions that Wafaa now follows
00:00:57
are the result of awareness-raising sessions like this one in her own home.
00:01:00
Under a project supported by UNICEF, community health workers go house to house,
00:01:05
teaching women and girls, who are usually the ones responsible for looking after the poultry,
00:01:10
how to protect themselves against a potentially lethal virus.
00:01:15
Simple tools like a flip chart show clearly, for example, the safe way to dispose of dead birds.
00:01:19
Schools are the other prime focus of the awareness campaign.
00:01:27
For many Egyptian families, poultry are a vital source of income and nutrition,
00:01:31
and several children have already fallen victim to bird flu.
00:01:36
Knowledge is the best way of ensuring that these youngsters stay healthy.
00:01:40
I know that avian flu, it spreads through migrating birds.
00:01:44
If someone handles birds, they should wash their hands properly afterwards.
00:01:53
Despite the growing risks, the breeding and trading of live poultry
00:02:00
is a vital part of the national economy here.
00:02:04
And as new cases of human infection continue to surface,
00:02:07
the awareness-raising campaign is being stepped up across the country,
00:02:11
recognition of the menace the virus now poses to birds and humans alike.
