You are watching UNICEF Television. 00:00:00
Winthy Tuyet remembers well when avian flu swept through her village. 00:00:05
The outbreaks in 2004 and 2005 led to the culling of more than 11,000 chickens in her 00:00:10
commune alone, and more than 2 million across the province. 00:00:16
Tuyet's small farm of 100 chickens was spared, but the effect on the poultry market was disastrous. 00:00:21
Prices plunged, and she could hardly make a living. 00:00:28
Now she lives in fear of the virus' return. 00:00:31
We are afraid of the return of another outbreak. 00:00:36
We think it is going to cause a lot of problems for us, especially in terms of economic loss. 00:00:39
Poultry is a major industry in Vietnam, with more than 250 million ducks, geese and chickens. 00:00:46
While the government is encouraging the development of larger farms, most of the country's poultry 00:00:52
farmers are like Tuyet, keeping small backyard flocks, with animals often roaming freely 00:00:57
through human living spaces. 00:01:03
UNICEF, funded by a grant from the Japanese government, is working with the Vietnamese 00:01:05
government to raise awareness in communities like this about how to prevent the spread 00:01:10
of avian flu. 00:01:15
Large billboards in urban areas and on major roadways call for thorough cooking of chicken 00:01:18
and proper hygiene, while public service announcements on national and local radio 00:01:23
and television urge poultry farmers to ensure their animals are vaccinated and kept in a 00:01:27
separate space from humans, and to wash and disinfect themselves after contact with poultry. 00:01:33
Personal hygiene is very important, not only to prevent avian flu, but also other diseases. 00:01:40
So the Ministry of Health has been raising awareness about personal hygiene, especially 00:01:47
hand washing, which is one of the ways avian flu can be prevented. 00:01:51
It is a message many poultry farmers here have been quick to accept. 00:01:57
Having already endured an outbreak, they know first-hand how avian flu can devastate lives 00:02:01
and livelihoods. 00:02:07
In Ha The province, Vietnam, this is Steve Nettleton reporting for UNICEF Television. 00:02:09
