Hi everyone, we're going to look at the past continuous, okay?
00:00:00
When we use the past continuous, we use it to say what we were doing at a particular moment in the past.
00:00:06
So it's an action that was happening at a particular point or time in the past.
00:00:14
Let's look at the structure of the past continuous first.
00:00:22
Let's just get rid of this.
00:00:28
Okay. To make the past continuous in positive sentences, we need a subject. It's a word like I, you, he, she, we, or they. Then we need the verb to be in the past, which means that we're only going to use was or were.
00:00:30
if we use was or were depends on which subject we are using for example if I
00:01:00
use the subject I then we need to use was the subject you then we need to use
00:01:10
were she or he was they were etc after the verb to be in the past we need to
00:01:18
use a verb and we always add the ing the words ing in the past continuous for example if i want
00:01:31
to use the verb walk i need to add ing and it becomes walking walking if i use the verb eat
00:01:41
Eat. It becomes eating. What would it be if I use the verb swim? It would become? That's right. Swimming.
00:01:55
And then any other information that we have, we put it at the end. Here usually in the past continuous, it's a phrase, it's a sentence or information that tells us exactly when this action was happening.
00:02:10
Let's look at the different subjects in positive sentences.
00:02:27
I was watching television at 8 o'clock last night.
00:02:35
Think for a minute.
00:02:43
How do you...
00:02:44
What does this mean in Spanish?
00:02:45
I was watching television at 8 o'clock last night.
00:02:48
Think in your head.
00:02:52
Can you say it in Spanish?
00:02:54
Well, in Spanish, you could say...
00:02:55
say, yo estaba viendo la televisión a las ocho por la noche. Or, we could say, veía
00:03:02
la televisión por la noche. You can use the two. Estaba viendo la televisión is a little
00:03:22
similar to what we have in English. Yo estaba viendo la televisión a las ocho por la noche.
00:03:36
Let's have a look with the subject you. You were playing in the garden at eight o'clock
00:03:49
last night. Think how you would say that in Spanish. That's right. Estabas jugando en
00:03:59
el jardín a las ocho por la noche. Or, we could say, jugaba en el jardín a las ocho
00:04:13
por la noche. Good. Now, in the third person, as you remember, these are called first person
00:04:25
singular, second person singular, and third person singular, because they refer to only
00:04:35
one person okay here we have she or he she was eating a sandwich at eight o'clock last night
00:04:41
or he was eating a sandwich at eight o'clock last night think how you would say that in spanish
00:04:52
We were walking in the park at 8 o'clock last night.
00:05:04
You were doing your homework at 8 o'clock last night.
00:05:20
Remember, this is you plural.
00:05:27
You plural, referring to more than one person.
00:05:29
Here, it's you singular, only referring to one person.
00:05:34
But the structure is identical.
00:05:39
And finally, they were sleeping at home at 8 o'clock last night.
00:05:44
In negative sentences, the structure is almost identical to positive sentences.
00:05:54
We need a subject at the beginning.
00:06:02
I, you, he, she, it, etc.
00:06:04
We need the verb to be in the past.
00:06:10
but this time we need the verb to be in the past in the negative so was the
00:06:15
negative of was is wasn't or was not the negative in the past of were is weren't
00:06:21
or were not remember when we when we are speaking English we tend to use
00:06:35
contractions like this wasn't or weren't but when we are writing English we tend
00:06:43
to use was not or were not just practice for a minute at saying wasn't weren't
00:06:51
on repeat with me wasn't wasn't weren't weren't okay good we also need the verb
00:07:03
plus the ing walk walking eat eating and any other information that comes in the
00:07:23
sentence at the end okay look at some examples I wasn't watching television at
00:07:30
eight o'clock last night. You weren't playing in the garden at eight o'clock last night.
00:07:39
You practice it. Good. Let's look at the structure when we make questions with the past continuous.
00:07:48
Now here we need to make a little change in the order of the subject and the verb to be.
00:08:07
Remember in the positive we start always start with a subject but in a question we're going to
00:08:15
change the order of the subject and the verb to be so we're going to have the
00:08:22
verb to be first was or were plus the subject I you he she etc and then we
00:08:26
have the verb plus ing walk walking eat eating and then we have the other
00:08:36
information look at some examples was I watching television last night at 8
00:08:42
o'clock. Were you playing in the garden at eight o'clock yesterday? Can you
00:08:51
practice? You say it. Good. So let's practice together. Alright, here we have a
00:09:02
question and a picture. Look at the picture. Let's look at the question. What
00:09:16
was Bianca doing at 11 o'clock last Saturday morning? Can you answer the
00:09:24
question with a past continuous answer that's right she was playing tennis at
00:09:31
11 o'clock last Saturday morning notice here that instead of using Bianca I
00:09:47
changed it to she okay she was playing tennis at 11 o'clock
00:09:55
o'clock last Thursday morning. Look at the picture. What were Aaron and Alba doing at
00:10:06
five o'clock yesterday afternoon? Answer the question with past continuous. That's right.
00:10:21
They were reading a book. And the last one. Look at the picture. What were my classmates
00:10:37
and I doing at 11 o'clock last Thursday morning we were listening to the teacher
00:10:53
in the classroom did you get that right with the subject we we use we because
00:11:10
here it's talking about classmates and I so it's referring to more than one
00:11:19
person and it includes me so we use the subject we we were listening to the
00:11:27
teacher in the classroom okay I hope that you understand the past continuous
00:11:35
now and you could do some exercises if not I suggest you look at this video
00:11:43
again to practice a little bit more it's a good idea
