UNICEF's Suzanna Dayne reports on a visit by lawmakers from the Inter-Parliamentary Union to UNICEF projects in Indonesia.
You're watching UNICEF Television.
00:00:00
Lawmakers from around the world made a one-day visit to the Indonesian island of Lombok
00:00:04
to see first-hand a number of UNICEF-supported projects.
00:00:09
The lawmakers were in the country for the annual Inter-Parliamentary Assembly,
00:00:13
which addressed many issues related to children.
00:00:17
Although the trip had its lighter moments, it actually addressed very serious issues
00:00:20
child abuse and health services for children and pregnant mothers.
00:00:25
The lawmakers visited a village health clinic
00:00:31
where they had a chance to see how mothers and young children
00:00:34
are informed about nutrition and health care for their young ones.
00:00:37
Kay Hull from Australia had her hands full during the visit
00:00:41
and expressed the need for governments to provide good health services.
00:00:44
Firstly, make all vaccinations and immunizations free.
00:00:49
Encourage reproductive health in mothers and families, including fathers.
00:00:55
And to ensure that every child has access to free medical services
00:01:02
in order to give them a healthy start to life.
00:01:07
But a child born safely is just the first step.
00:01:12
Protecting them as they grow from violence, abuse and exploitation is vital for all children.
00:01:15
The lawmakers saw how the child protection body LPA is trying to do just that
00:01:21
by involving young people in the cause.
00:01:25
But ensuring that children are nurtured and protected
00:01:36
is not something that can be achieved overnight.
00:01:38
Unless there's a combination of all the efforts
00:01:42
and putting all the efforts of everybody together, including UNICEF and IPU and others,
00:01:45
I think we are able to accomplish that.
00:01:51
But this is a huge, huge amount of task.
00:01:53
The highlight of the visit for many lawmakers was meeting a group of fourth graders
00:01:57
who were learning about the issue of abuse and violence.
00:02:01
The students are part of a pilot project under UNICEF's child-friendly school approach
00:02:04
that promotes an open and interactive environment.
00:02:09
So that everybody gets a very good education, because that can secure the future.
00:02:13
I think we have to promote that as parliamentarians,
00:02:17
but UNICEF is a very good organization to show it in all countries what it can do.
