Invisible Women in History Project
Hi everyone, so today I'm going to talk about Emma Goldman.
00:00:00
So she was an American anarchist who has contributed immensely towards the development of anarchist political philosophy in American Europe
00:00:04
and was known as the most dangerous woman in America.
00:00:11
Emma Goldman was born on June 27, 1869 in Kovno, Lithuania, and died on May 14, 1940 in Toronto, Ontario.
00:00:19
Emma Goldman was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Russia.
00:00:28
She had two half-sisters and three brothers.
00:00:34
She had a difficult childhood as her father stopped her from going to school when she was a teenager and took into independent education.
00:00:37
She also began working in order to help her family.
00:00:44
Then, she emigrated to the U.S. in 1885.
00:00:49
The 4th of May, 1886, several workers in Chicago's High Market Square were peacefully holding a rally in support of workers striking for an eight-hour day when someone threw a bomb that resulted in the deaths of seven police officers.
00:00:53
Even though the actual bomber was never identified, several anarchists were convicted.
00:01:07
This incident regaled men towards anarchism.
00:01:13
She moved to New York in 1989, where she met anarchist Alexander Bergman, who introduced her to Johan Most.
00:01:20
Impressed after listening to his lecture on anarchism, she became his student.
00:01:27
She delivered her first public lecture in 1890.
00:01:32
In 1893, she was jailed because of inciting a riot.
00:01:36
Then, she co-authored the book Anarchy Defended by Anarchists with Johan Most in 1896.
00:01:41
She founded the magazine Mother Earth in 1906.
00:01:48
The magazine contained articles on anarchist topics like women empowerment, birth control, labor rights, and governmental control.
00:01:52
During 1915 and 1916, she went on a national tour and spoke about birth control and contraception, for which she was often arrested.
00:02:00
The U.S. entered the World War I in 1917, and she and Bergman spent some time in Russia in exile during 1920 and 1921 before moving to Berlin.
00:02:09
She published two books about her experiences in Russia, My Disillusionment in Russia and My Father Disillusionment in Russia.
00:02:20
She shifted to London in 1924 and then went to Canada in 1927.
00:02:29
Her autobiography, Living My Life, was out in 1931.
00:02:35
Emma Goldman went to Spain in 1936 in the wake of the Spanish Civil War, where she supported the Spanish anarchists.
00:02:40
She wrote for the newspapers, Spain and the World, and joined hands with Rebecca West and Sybil Thorndike to establish the Committee to Aid Homeless Spanish Women and Children.
00:02:47
You showed me love when I wasn't feeling it
00:03:13
You helped me fight when I was giving in
00:03:21
And you made me laugh when I was
00:03:29
Cause you are, you are the reason why I'm still
00:03:33
Cause you are, you are the reason why my head is still above water
00:03:42
And if I could I'd get you the moon
00:03:52
And give it to you
00:03:57
And if death was coming for you
00:04:01
Cause you are, you are the reason why I'm still
00:04:10
Hanging on
00:04:14
Cause you are, you are the reason why my heart is still
00:04:17
Of water
00:04:22
And if I could, I'd guide you through
00:04:24
And give it to you
00:04:29
And if that's what's coming for you
00:04:33
Life for you
00:04:37
Cause you are, you are the reason why I'm still
00:04:41
Hanging on
00:04:45
Cause you are, you are the reason why my heart is still
00:04:48
Full of water
00:04:53
And if I could, I'd guide you to move
00:04:55
And if I could, I'd guide you to the moon And give it to you, and if I could, I'd guide
