Hi guys, Dan for BBC Learning English.
00:00:03
As you can see, I'm not at all happy about this situation, something's gone missing.
00:00:21
Now this week we're going to talk about modals with a past meaning and as usual we're going
00:00:25
to do the whole thing in 90 seconds, excuse me.
00:00:30
So as you know, English has modal verbs, there are nine of them in total.
00:00:34
are must, can't, may, might, and could. Now these verbs are normally followed by the
00:00:39
infinitive and they're special because they don't change their form for person
00:00:44
or to show time. They have a present meaning but when we want to use them
00:00:48
with a past meaning we use the modal verb plus have plus the past participle.
00:00:53
In this case, Rob must have eaten my cake. Now, Rob must have eaten my cake is a
00:00:58
is a measure of confidence. It means that I am extremely confident
00:01:06
that Rob did this at some time in the past. When we change the modal verb, we
00:01:10
change the level of confidence.
00:01:15
For example, Rob can't have eaten my cake.
00:01:17
This means I think that this is impossible, but I know he did it.
00:01:21
Let's make it less certain. Rob
00:01:25
may have eaten my cake. This means it's possible.
00:01:28
Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. I'm not sure. And the same for might.
00:01:32
rob might have eaten my cake finally at the lowest level of confidence meaning this is possible but
00:01:36
i'm not 100 sure at all rob could have eaten my cake but that's not true because rob must
00:01:42
have eaten my cake rob always eats my cake i suppose it's my fault the last set of modal
00:01:51
verbs that we can talk about is should when we make a mistake in the past this is called hindsight
00:01:56
So, maybe I shouldn't have left it...
00:02:02
I should have been a bit quicker.
00:02:04
Maybe I shouldn't have left it in the fridge.
00:02:07
Maybe I should have put my cake at my desk.
00:02:09
But Rob, come on, man.
00:02:12
Anyway, guys, modal verbs in the past.
00:02:15
It's modal plus have plus the past participle.
00:02:17
Don't forget, I've got to go and sort Rob out.
00:02:19
See you next time, okay?
