In defence of human rights
Sometimes we say that human rights are the ethical standard that should be used to determine
00:00:00
if a law is fair.
00:00:09
What does this mean?
00:00:11
As we have seen, the law can be unfair and unjust.
00:00:13
So how do we know when the law is acceptable?
00:00:18
Well, nowadays we think that a law is acceptable if it respects human rights.
00:00:21
That's what we mean when we say that human rights are a normative ideal to determine
00:00:27
when the legislation is legitimate.
00:00:33
So this is a key aspect you can use in order to determine if the laws are valid or not.
00:00:38
You are entitled to break the law when the law does not respect human rights.
00:00:47
But who defends human rights in the world?
00:00:55
Human rights are a common ethical frame for all humanity, but as we know, they are not
00:01:00
always respected.
00:01:09
Who defends them in the world?
00:01:11
There are some important associations and organizations that defend human rights.
00:01:13
Maybe you thought about the United Nations, who made the Declaration of Human Rights and
00:01:18
who defend human rights worldwide.
00:01:24
The United Nations, as you know, is formed by all the countries in the world and they
00:01:27
have an international force that can be used in order to prevent serious violations of
00:01:32
human rights.
00:01:41
For example, when there is a war conflict.
00:01:42
We can also go to the tribunals if we think that our human rights have been violated.
00:01:46
First of all, you can go to your national tribunals if you are a Spanish citizen and
00:01:52
you think that your human rights have been violated.
00:01:57
You are protected by the law.
00:02:00
You can go to a court and the tribunals will protect you.
00:02:02
Nevertheless, sometimes the tribunals don't defend the rights of the citizens.
00:02:06
For example, when their verdict goes against your case.
00:02:12
In this situation, if you still think that your rights have been violated and this tribunal
00:02:17
in Spain has ignored you, you can appeal and you can go to a higher court, which is called
00:02:24
the European Court of Human Rights.
00:02:31
This European Court of Human Rights is located in Strasbourg and it defends the human rights
00:02:34
of European citizens who think that their rights have been violated and that they have
00:02:39
not been protected by their national tribunals.
00:02:45
There is also an international criminal court, which is located in The Hague in the Netherlands
00:02:50
and which is responsible for very serious violations of human rights, such as cases
00:02:57
of genocide or war crimes.
00:03:03
But not only big institutions or the United Nations are there to protect your rights,
00:03:07
you are also there to fight for the protection of human rights.
00:03:14
So it is very important that the civil society made by associations created by citizens also
00:03:18
defends human rights and is involved in the protection of our rights.
00:03:25
There are many NGOs that defend human rights.
00:03:30
You might have heard of some of them, for example, the Red Cross or Amnesty International
00:03:34
or Human Rights Watch, which are very important, worldwide known, and that are committed with
00:03:41
the defense of human rights.
00:03:47
It is important to know that we should all participate in the defense of human rights.
00:03:49
It is also our personal responsibility.
