welcome back guys how much time it has passed since the last time okay so 00:00:00
getting back to the topic we are going to study the point tree of the book in 00:00:08
the unit tree which is the life in medieval cities let's see how the life 00:00:16
in medieval cities was you see this is an image an ideal image of a medieval 00:00:22
city you can see the city was surrounded by a solid wall of rock all right and 00:00:29
always with a with a cathedral and with a main place main square and also in 00:00:36
some times not in only cases there used to be a castle inside the walls all 00:00:46
right okay this is an ideal image but what kind of important buildings used to 00:00:52
have medieval city first of all we have to go to the gates of the wall the wall 00:01:00
used to be composed by several gates but always used to used to be one which is 00:01:10
the most important like in this case the gates used to be closed in the night so 00:01:17
that nobody can go out and get in the city another important building is the 00:01:24
cathedral is the religious building the most important in the Christian cities 00:01:34
the cathedral was the center of the Christian people and maybe the most 00:01:39
important building in all the city another important building was the city 00:01:45
hall whenever the council used to be gathered as you can know in the previous 00:01:53
years before in the early years the council of the city used to be gathered 00:02:01
in the churches but when the passing of the years the mayor and the council 00:02:08
decided to create new buildings dedicated to the to those meetings to 00:02:16
those gatherings so the city halls were created like this one you have in on 00:02:22
this image another important building was the hospital the hospital which used 00:02:28
to be located around a big square and afterwards the square drives to the 00:02:38
hospital which is the this this is an example of a building dedicated to 00:02:47
hospital apart from that there were another very important buildings okay 00:02:53
but that of here are the most important apart from that the city has a plane in 00:03:01
the plane as you can see in this image which is an example of a city called 00:03:19
ruins you can see a plane and this plane was divided into parishes into 00:03:25
parishes and what is a parish is kind of a district a district of the city some 00:03:34
of those parishes were habitated inhabited by not only by Christians but 00:03:44
also by Jewish people and by Muslims overall in Spain the city of Toledo in 00:03:51
the medieval ages was populated overall by Christians but there were parishes 00:03:59
dedicated to Muslims and to Jewish people apart from those neighborhoods or 00:04:04
parishes or districts the rest of the districts which were Christians were 00:04:11
baptized with the name of Saint like in this case you can see this district 00:04:19
dedicated to samples in specifically the samples Cathedral was located in this 00:04:26
harsh all right inside the city inside the plane of the city we have a very important place which 00:04:33
was the main square mainly dedicated to the market which was held or celebrated once a week in this 00:04:45
case you see the main square of Prague the capital city of a republic a checker in medieval plane you 00:04:55
can also take into consideration and realize that the main cities or almost 00:05:06
the whole the whole streets the whole streets of each one of the cities in 00:05:15
Europe were narrow so narrow and windy with so many curves like in this case 00:05:22
this is a city in Europe and you can see the streets are very narrow not wide and 00:05:31
this is a common fact in the medieval cities oh wait a minute all right but 00:05:38
the cities in the medieval ages had a very important problem this problem was 00:05:51
that there wasn't current water so the cities were unhealthy places because 00:05:57
people used to throw rubbish the streets and because of the decomposition of the 00:06:07
rubbish used to be propagated and spread diseases and besides that who blacks 00:06:15
were created as you can see there the dirty wash the dirty water was thrown by 00:06:24
a window by everybody in the city so it was a dirty place totally completely 00:06:35
dirty place so there was not so beautiful in the medieval ages in the 00:06:42
But apart from that, one important factor in the cities was the artisans. 00:06:48
The most of the citizens in a medieval burgh or city were dedicated to artisaning. 00:07:01
And the artisans used to do several kinds of works or tasks. 00:07:11
Like in this case you can see this is a shewer, un tejedor, or in this other case maybe you 00:07:18
can see a man getting sharp the knife, it is sharpening the knife, un afilador, un acuchillador, 00:07:27
etc. 00:07:40
But the artisans were divided into three stages. 00:07:44
The first stage were the apprentices, the people who had to learn from other people 00:07:49
who were expertise in the tasks. 00:07:57
Then there were the journeymen, people who used to work for the rest of the neighborhood, 00:08:01
a journey, a complete day, were the workers indeed, the journeymen, and then the masters 00:08:12
were those artisans who used to teach the apprentices and the journeymen. 00:08:21
So there were three categories for the artisans. 00:08:29
As you can see, the artisans used to compose the calling guilds, and what is an artisan 00:08:37
guild is what we call un gremio de artesanos. Un gremio de artesanos used to be, an artisan 00:08:44
guild used to be a neighborhood of the same kind of artisans. I don't know, shoemakers, 00:08:52
I don't know, platters, sharpers, or I don't know, farmers, or maybe bakers, or any kind of job. 00:09:01
So that means that the neighborhoods used to be inhabited or populated by shoemakers. 00:09:16
the other neighborhood used to be made up by bakers or etc. etc. etc. 00:09:25
¿Qué significa que cada... bueno, pues que cada barrio tenía un gremio de artesanos? 00:09:36
Un gremio de artesanos dedicado a zapateros, otro gremio de artesanos dedicado a plateros, 00:09:41
otro a panaderos, otro a carniceros... whatever, you know, each neighborhood had its own guild of artisans. 00:09:45
One of the most famous was the Shoemakers Guild. Everybody used to use shoes. So Shoemakers had more work than the other guilds. And used to be the most famous guild in all the cities, in the medieval ages. 00:09:58
ok more or less in a nutshell this is this is that the this is the way how it 00:10:18
was the leaf in the medieval cities so now a you have to take into account the 00:10:30
next day I'm going to ask to you about this video and we're going to work out 00:10:37
the topic 00:10:42
I have been talking about 00:10:43
so see you next day 00:10:46
goodbye 00:10:48
