In this video, we're going to look at question tags.
00:00:00
Now, question tags turn a statement into a question.
00:00:05
They're often used for checking information that we think we know is true,
00:00:10
or we expect the other person to agree with us.
00:00:16
Tag questions are made using an auxiliary verb, like be, have, do, does,
00:00:21
and a subject pronoun, for example, I, you, she.
00:00:26
When we make negative question tags, they're usually contracted.
00:00:33
It's warm today, isn't it?
00:00:42
It is is affirmative, so the question tag isn't it is negative.
00:00:45
You like pizza, don't you?
00:00:55
Like, again, is affirmative, so the question tag is with don't you, negative.
00:00:58
If the main clause is negative, the question tag is positive.
00:01:07
It's cold, isn't it?
00:01:13
There is one weird exception.
00:01:17
The question tag after I am is aren't I?
00:01:19
I'm in charge of the food, aren't I?
00:01:25
Now let's have a little look at the format of question tags in present, past, present perfect and can.
00:01:34
She's Italian, isn't she?
00:01:44
They live in London, don't they?
00:01:49
We're working tomorrow, aren't we?
00:01:54
If you look, each time the statement is affirmative and the question tag is negative.
00:01:58
It was cold yesterday, wasn't it?
00:02:05
He went to the party last night, didn't he?
00:02:12
We were waiting at the station, weren't we?
00:02:19
They have been to Japan, haven't they?
00:02:23
He can help, can't he?
00:02:27
Again, look at the structure.
00:02:30
The statement is affirmative.
00:02:33
The question tag, negative.
00:02:36
So now we're going to look at it the other way round.
00:02:44
Negative sentences with positive tags.
00:02:48
We aren't late, are we?
00:02:52
She doesn't have any children, does she?
00:02:54
The bus isn't coming, is it? She wasn't at home yesterday, was she?
00:02:58

00:03:06
She hasn't eaten all the cake, has she? She can't speak Arabic, can she?
00:03:14
This time, each statement is negative, so the question tag is positive.
00:03:22
