UNICEF Correspondent Anwulika Okafor reports on UNICEF's call for increased aid for Iraqi children.
You're watching UNICEF Television.
00:00:00
Almost 4 million people, some 15% of the population,
00:00:04
have left their homes in Iraq because of the violence and insecurity plaguing their country.
00:00:08
Half are children.
00:00:13
Today, UNICEF is launching a worldwide call for $42 million in aid to help these displaced families,
00:00:15
who are located both in Iraq and in neighboring countries such as Jordan and Syria.
00:00:22
While UNICEF, its partners and neighboring governments have done much to address the needs of these families,
00:00:28
from immunization drives to providing clean water and rebuilding schools,
00:00:34
much more needs to be done.
00:00:39
In addition, the number of displaced continues to place heavy burdens
00:00:41
on social and health care systems already under strain.
00:00:45
Iraqi children are certainly not better off today than they were two years ago.
00:00:49
The numbers of children malnourished, the numbers of children not vaccinated,
00:00:53
the number of children that I cited, the percentages no longer attending school,
00:00:58
demonstrate that children are not better off today than they were two years ago.
00:01:02
Certainly between the period of sanctions and two years ago, things had improved,
00:01:07
and we start to see some improvement in mortality as well as in nutrition.
00:01:12
But what we've seen is in the last couple of years that progress is starting to fall off
00:01:17
and we're starting to see real change for the negative.
00:01:22
UNICEF hopes to use the money to intensify its support of essential programs,
00:01:26
especially in the areas of education, sanitation, and immunization,
00:01:31
for 1.6 million Iraqi children over a period of six months.
00:01:35
While six months will not be enough to cure all of the problems for these young children,
00:01:42
it will hopefully be a start to a better and healthier future for them all.
