UNICEF correspondent Thomas Nybo reports on the young leaders participating in the BioVision Forum in Lyon, France.
You're watching UNICEF Television.

Fifteen-year-old Hanna Gama has traveled thousands of kilometers from Malawi
00:00:02
to meet some of the world's top scientists gathering here in Lyon, France,
00:00:09
for the BioVision World Life Sciences Forum.
00:00:13
Hanna is joined by nine other young leaders from such countries
00:00:16
as Tajikistan, Laos, and Morocco.
00:00:19
It's really important for children to be at the BioVision because in true reality,
00:00:24
if we look at these problems concerning health, nutrition,
00:00:28
and agriculture, they're affected by children.
00:00:32
So I think it's much better for the children to present their problems individually rather
00:00:35
than the audits to present them
00:00:39
because they do not really know what the children face.
00:00:41
The BioVision Forum opens March 11th, but Hanna
00:00:44
and the other children have already been brainstorming for several days.
00:00:47
As part of the UNICEF BioVision Children's Forum,
00:00:51
they're putting together a children's call to action, which they will present
00:00:54
to a plenary session on the last day of the main BioVision Forum.
00:00:58
Every two years, BioVision brings together Nobel Prize-winning scientists and industry
00:01:02
and society leaders to address vital life science issues facing our world today in the areas
00:01:07
of health, agriculture, and the environment.
00:01:13
The children attending have already achieved impressive results
00:01:16
with related programs in their countries.
00:01:19
Hanna is focusing on improving the juvenile justice system and the sanitation
00:01:21
in juvenile detention centers in Malawi.
00:01:26
Irene from Kenya is a leading advocate for the elimination of female genital cutting,
00:01:29
even though she is just 16 years old.
00:01:33
Hao has dedicated his energies to protect the environment in his native China,
00:01:36
in particular, its water supplies.
00:01:40
Abigail Gimo is the director of BioVision Next.
00:01:43
Children have a very spontaneous, natural way
00:01:46
of expressing exactly what is their daily life, what their reality is.
00:01:57
Not only is BioVision giving these children a chance to share their experiences,
00:02:04
it's giving them new strategies to improve living conditions
00:02:08
for other children back in their home countries.
