What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? 00:00:06
Well, first, let's talk about what it's not. 00:00:13
It's not a floating island of trash, like a garbage dump or a landfill. 00:00:16
It's also not the only patch. 00:00:20
They exist all throughout the ocean, 00:00:22
and the Pacific Garbage Patch just happens to be the most famous. 00:00:24
Garbage patches are large areas of marine debris concentration 00:00:28
that are formed by rotating ocean currents called gyres, 00:00:31
kind of like big whirlpools that suck things in. 00:00:34
A garbage patch is made up of tiny plastic pieces 00:00:39
called microplastics that are less than five millimeters long. 00:00:42
It's more like pepper flakes swirling in a soup 00:00:46
than something you can skim off the surface. 00:00:48
You might come across some larger items 00:00:51
like plastic bottles, but it's possible 00:00:53
to sail through a garbage patch and not see anything. 00:00:55
And they're a big problem for the ocean and us. 00:00:59
People often ask why we can't just scoop up 00:01:03
all the marine debris in the ocean. 00:01:06
And the answer is, unfortunately, it's just not that simple. 00:01:08
The first challenge is the sheer size 00:01:12
of these garbage patches. 00:01:14
They're huge. 00:01:15
They're constantly moving with ocean currents. 00:01:17
And there's debris from the ocean's surface 00:01:20
all the way down to the sea floor. 00:01:22
Not to mention all the marine life we would disrupt 00:01:24
if we tried to just scoop up debris. 00:01:27
So what can we do? 00:01:29
Well, the ultimate solution is prevention. 00:01:31
And we need to keep that as our highest priority. 00:01:34
We can reduce, reuse, and recycle 00:01:36
to keep trash out of the ocean in the first place. 00:01:39
And we can participate in things like shoreline cleanups. 00:01:42
It's a lot easier to deal with debris 00:01:44
before it gets to the ocean. 00:01:46
Because until we stop marine debris at the source, 00:01:48
we'll just be cleaning it up forever. 00:01:52
