Today, we're going to speak about tag questions. 00:00:00
We can use tag questions with many verbs. 00:00:04
We're going to learn how to use them with the verbs to be, can and to do. 00:00:07
Let's start with tag questions using the verb to be. 00:00:14
As you should remember, we use tag questions to make sure about something we think is true. 00:00:18
To make a tag question, we need a sentence and then a question 00:00:25
Let's see an example 00:00:32
You are very intelligent, is the sentence 00:00:35
And aren't you, is the tag question 00:00:39
In this sentence, the verb is are, which is the verb to be 00:00:43
Now, if the sentence is inaffirmative, then the question has to be negative 00:00:49
Are is inaffirmative, so we turn it into aren't in the part of the question 00:00:57
Another example 00:01:04
John is fantastic 00:01:07
Here, the verb is is inaffirmative, so we turn it into negative 00:01:09
Isn't he? 00:01:16
The last one, Helen isn't very tall. 00:01:19
Now the verb is in negative. 00:01:25
We have to turn it into affirmative. 00:01:28
Is she? 00:01:31
Another thing we need is the subject that follows the verb. 00:01:34
We need to use the same person or subject we have in the sentence. 00:01:39
In the first sentence, the subject is you. 00:01:44
So in the question, it is also you 00:01:47
In the second sentence, the subject is John 00:01:50
John is a boy, so the subject is he 00:01:54
In the last sentence, the subject is Helen 00:01:58
Helen is a girl, so the subject is she 00:02:02
Now let's practice 00:02:05
You are my friend 00:02:08
What do you think is the top question? 00:02:14
If the verb is are in affirmative and the subject is you. 00:02:17
Aren't you? 00:02:24
Good. 00:02:26
Next sentence. 00:02:27
Frank isn't my teacher. 00:02:29
Is he? 00:02:32
Well done. 00:02:36
Max and Joanna are your parents. 00:02:38
Aren't today? 00:02:44
Very good. 00:02:46
As the verb is are, you need aren't in the negative. 00:02:47
And Max and Joan are two people, so we use they. 00:02:52
Your dog is so cute, isn't it? 00:02:56
Very good. 00:03:03
A dog is an animal, so we use it. 00:03:05
Your friends aren't very fun, are they? 00:03:09
Well done. 00:03:17
Now, let's continue with tag questions using the verb can. 00:03:19
These sentences work exactly the same way. 00:03:29
We also have to consider if the verb can is in affirmative or in negative. 00:03:32
For example, you can't fly. 00:03:39
In this sentence, the verb is in negative. 00:03:43
How do we have to write the verb in the tag question? 00:03:46
Yes, in affirmative. 00:03:50
You can't fly, can you? 00:03:53
If the subject is you, we also use the same subject in the question. 00:03:56
More examples. 00:04:02
Mary can swim. 00:04:04
As can is an affirmative, we will use can't in the question. 00:04:06
Can't she? 00:04:13
We use she as Mary is a girl. 00:04:14
Your parents can't run very fast 00:04:17
The verb is in negative 00:04:23
So we need can in affirmative 00:04:25
Also my parents are the subject 00:04:29
Two people, so we use they 00:04:33
Then the tag question is 00:04:36
Can they 00:04:39
Dogs can bark 00:04:42
As the verb is in affirmative, we will use can in negative, can't. 00:04:45
And the subject is dogs in plural, so we will use they, because there are more than one dog. 00:04:51
Now, let's practice. 00:05:01
You can't speak Chinese. 00:05:06
Can you? 00:05:11
very good can't is in negative so we write it in the affirmative and you is 00:05:12
the subject so we use the same subject Max can't speak English can't he Lucy 00:05:18
can't build a house can't she you can play sports in the playground can't you 00:05:29
very good I can't speaking in class can I fantastic 00:05:41
