What is globalisation? Is it beneficial or problematic?

Descargar la transcripción

Have a look at the clothes you're wearing today. 00:00:01
What do you think they have been produced? 00:00:04
What about the electronic device you're using just now? 00:00:06
Where has it been manufactured? 00:00:10
And what about the food that you eat? 00:00:13
Where has it been grown? 00:00:16
If you think about it for a minute, you'll see that many of the products that you use 00:00:19
come from abroad, from very distant parts of the world. 00:00:24
They travel many thousands of kilometers to find you before you buy them. 00:00:28
And this does not only happen with products, it also happens with services, 00:00:36
because you can see online films or TV series that have been produced in a very distant place. 00:00:41
Of course, nations have always been in contact through trade, 00:00:50
But in the last decades, the interconnection between different parts of the world has been 00:00:55
so intense, due to the increase in the efficiency of transport and communications, that we really 00:01:01
live in a different era, in an interconnected world where we are all interdependent. 00:01:08
This process of growing interconnection and interdependency is what we call globalization. 00:01:16
Is globalization a positive or a negative phenomenon? 00:01:24
Globalization has obvious benefits. 00:01:30
For example, it increases prosperity, because it fosters trade and economic growth. 00:01:32
But it also has drawbacks. 00:01:39
For example, economic growth has not been the same in every country in the world. 00:01:42
Rich countries benefit a lot from globalization, much more than poor countries. 00:01:48
So even though every country in the world can grow because of globalization, some of 00:01:53
them grow more than others and inequalities increase. 00:01:59
Another problem of globalization is the cultural homogenization of the world. 00:02:05
This means that today different parts of the world have lost diversity and they have similar 00:02:12
ways of living. 00:02:20
For example, the way we dress, the kind of music we listen to, or the films we watch 00:02:22
are very similar everywhere in the world. 00:02:29
That didn't happen in the past, so we have lost a rich diversity of ways of living because 00:02:32
of globalization. 00:02:38
In the process of globalization, media play a key role. 00:02:42
In the past, people learned about what happened in the world through newspapers, listening 00:02:47
to the radio or watching TV, but today social networks play a key role in the dissemination 00:02:53
of news, and this is also positive and negative at the same time. 00:03:02
The use of social networks and the democratization of information makes it possible for any citizen 00:03:09
to become a journalist and to broadcast online what is happening in their neighborhood or 00:03:17
in the city. For example, they can protest against violations of human rights, but it 00:03:22
also makes possible to spread content that violates human rights and that doesn't respect 00:03:29
minorities. As you are very well aware of, fake news are a very important issue today, 00:03:35
and they appear in social networks and also in traditional media sometimes. So what should 00:03:44
we do about this. From an ethical point of view, media should be subject to some rules 00:03:52
in order to grant that they are truthful, that they don't spread lies. Of course, there 00:04:02
are legal limits to what media can do, because the law forbids telling lies and punishes 00:04:10
people who spread information that is incorrect. 00:04:19
But beyond legal limits, there should also be ethical limits, 00:04:24
meaning that people should morally take into account what is right and what is not right to do. 00:04:29
Moreover, citizens should exercise their responsibility while using social networks, 00:04:37
being aware that what they do has real impact on the life of other people and on our world. 00:04:44
