00:00:11
in 1914 a serbian guy assassinated the the duke of the austro-hungarian empire and his wife
00:00:18
the serbian guy killed the duke of the austro-hungarian empire and his wife
00:00:27
so war spread across austro-hungary and serbia russia was allied with
00:00:34
Serbia and France but Germany was allied with Austro-Hungary and Serbia. Russia was allied
00:00:41
with Serbia and France and Germany was allied with Austro-Hungary. So Germany decided to attack France
00:00:52
but for Germany to attack France German forces would have to go through Belgium and Belgium
00:01:00
was allied with Britain. Germany was allied with Germany was had to go through Belgium. Belgium
00:01:12
was an allied weapon and that meant war.
00:01:22
Europe was now at war. This war revolutionised
00:01:35
the art of battle. Planes started bombing around
00:01:39
and in 1914 officers went into battle with swords and a pistol. In 1918
00:01:44
there were tanks on the battlefield. Europe was cut in half by trenches,
00:01:51
filthy veteran places machine guns had only recently been invented so back then
00:01:57
soldiers were weren't used to rapid fire millions of soldiers died just charging
00:02:06
at enemy guns there were two sides in Europe the Allied forces and the central
00:02:14
powers between 1914 and 1918 more than 30 nations joined the war most of them
00:02:26
on the Allies' side. In 1917, the Americans finally joined the war, and so did the Japanese,
00:02:34
both on the Allies' side, and helped facilitate the end and potential victory of the war.
00:02:44
Some of the bloodiest battles in recorded history happened during this war. For example,
00:02:52
of the Somme July 1st 1916, Battle of Amiens August 8th 1918, Battle of Cambrai November
00:02:59
20th 1914, Battle of Verdun February 21st 1916, Battle of Tannenby August 26th 1914,
00:03:10
Battle of the Marne in September 12, 1914. By 1918 Germany was finally crippled and could
00:03:25
no longer support the German army. Several German politicians surrendered. Military leadership
00:03:36
felt betrayed by this and wanted to carry on but weren't able to financially. This
00:03:43
betrayal gave one of the foundations for the rise of Hitler. In 1918, the two sides decided
00:03:49
to stop fighting and make peace. This agreement took place at the 11th hour of the 11th day
00:04:02
of the 11th month, 1918. Thank you for listening.
