A rare opportunity for a select group of scientifically-inclined children
00:00:04
attending the BioVision Life Sciences Forum in Lyon, France.
00:00:08
Thank you very much and welcome you all.
00:00:11
I'm Hannah, as Hal has just said,
00:00:14
and we are going to be your moderators for today's intergenerational dialogue.
00:00:17
On the opening day of the conference,
00:00:22
they hosted a private breakfast with three Nobel Prize-winning scientists
00:00:24
to discuss the children's own projects to improve living conditions
00:00:28
back in their home countries.
00:00:31
I think the first thing we can try to do is to inspire you
00:00:33
and to tell you about our own life,
00:00:39
how we happen to experience science and life in general,
00:00:43
and to tell you that also for us it was not always simple
00:00:51
and we had to overcome hurdles in our life.
00:00:56
The children wasted no time asking questions about the challenges they face.
00:01:00
Is it possible to apply genetics to help improve the quality of water?
00:01:05
It might be possible to develop novel microorganisms or plants
00:01:12
that are especially good at removing contaminants.
00:01:18
They also spoke with UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Kool Gautam.
00:01:23
How can BioVision and UNICEF ensure that we can keep in touch
00:01:27
and develop lasting networks?
00:01:31
We would hope that when you go back, that every three, four months,
00:01:34
you will send us a small report on what is happening with your project,
00:01:39
what kind of progress is being made,
00:01:43
and how can we be more helpful to you.
00:01:46
The lively discussion left the children inspired and focused on their work.
00:01:50
Ladies and gentlemen, I think this is one of the most unforgettable days of our lives
00:01:55
because today we received the answers from the most experienced scientists in the world.
00:02:01
Perhaps one day, years from now,
00:02:06
these children will be award-winning scientists themselves,
00:02:09
sharing their knowledge with a new generation of children.
