Video about the Spanish War of Independence.
Hello, today we are going to study the Spanish War of Independence, which is on page 90 of the Social Science book.
00:00:00
First, we have to understand what is the origin of this independence war.
00:00:08
Everything started when Carlos IV was the king of Spain.
00:00:14
Here you have him, okay, this one.
00:00:19
And Godoy was his valido.
00:00:23
this means that he was governing Spain while Carlos IV was the king. While this
00:00:25
was happening in Spain, in France there was a revolution called French
00:00:32
Revolution and France became a republic. Napoleon Bonaparte started to be the
00:00:38
Emperor of France and he wanted to conquer more territories so he asked
00:00:45
Godoy and Carlos IV to enter Spain in order to get Portugal and conquer Portugal.
00:00:51
The problem was that when they were in Madrid, Napoleon took the power from Carlos IV and
00:00:59
Godoy and gave this power to José Bonaparte, who was his brother.
00:01:05
So his brother became the emperor of Spain.
00:01:12
After this, this was in 1808, in the 2nd of May of 1808, there was a popular uprising
00:01:19
that was violent in order to stop the French troops.
00:01:28
And this was the beginning of the independence war.
00:01:32
And how was the end of this war?
00:01:36
Well, after some years of fighting between the French troops and the guerrillas, which
00:01:38
were Spanish armed groups, they received help from the Portugal and Great Britain armies.
00:01:45
And finally in the 1813 the French troops were defeated by Spanish and also José Monaparte
00:01:54
left Spain.
00:02:03
Finally another important thing about the independence war is that during this war in
00:02:09
the 1812, the constitution of Cádiz was created. It was called La Pepa because José Buenaparte
00:02:15
was called Pepe Botella. And this constitution was the first Spanish constitution and in
00:02:25
this constitution they agree that all free men are equal and for the first time the government
00:02:32
is chosen by vote and finally that the monarchy is controlled by the parliament okay so this
00:02:40
was a very big change for spain and for europe and it was the start of the contemporary age
