Today we are going to study the last page of this unit that reads about the democracy in Spain. 00:00:00
They are on the pages 108 and 109 of the social science book. So we are going to start with 00:00:06
Franco's death. As you know it was in 1975 and after this it started a period of change that 00:00:16
was called the transition until Spain became a democracy. When Franco died he 00:00:24
named Juan Carlos I, the grandson of Alfonso XIII, the king of Spain. Juan 00:00:32
Carlos agreed with the reformers in order to start to be a democratic state 00:00:39
so this was the start of the democracy. In 1976 Adolfo Suarez became the 00:00:45
president of the government and he continued to be the president until 00:00:53
until the first democratic elections in 1977. In the 1978 it's 00:00:59
important to mention that the Spanish Constitution was written and voted so 00:01:09
the Spanish Constitution is the most important law of Spain and it 00:01:16
establishes how it is going to be governed so it's important to say that 00:01:21
Spain according to the Constitution is a constitutional monarchy this means that 00:01:27
we have a king but the king is not going to have the power of government of 00:01:32
Spain the power of the state is selected by the people with elections and it also 00:01:38
establishes that Spain is a unified state but it has autonomy with the 00:01:45
territory so the territories for example the communities the autonomous 00:01:52
communities or the provinces or even the different towns and cities can decide 00:01:57
about some aspects of their government another thing that it establishes is 00:02:04
that the official language of Spain is Spanish, Castellano, however the 00:02:10
autonomous communities can speak their own language. Finally we are going to 00:02:16
talk about the European Union. It used to be the European Economic Community, the 00:02:23
EEC, and Spain became a member in the 1986. In the 1993 the European Economic 00:02:29
community became the european union and there were more and more democratic countries from europe 00:02:39
in the 2002 they created a common currency that was called the euro 00:02:46
euros that we use now so with this presentation we have finished this year bye 00:02:54
