In this video, we're going to look at how to say the years in English.
00:00:00
Soon you'll be learning about history, which is studying things that happened in the past.
00:00:08
When we talk about history, we need to say when things happened.
00:00:15
So we use dates, which can be said as years or centuries.
00:00:20
The first thing we need to learn is BC and AD.
00:00:26
BC stands for Before Christ.
00:00:32
So everything that happened before Christ was born has the letters BC after it.
00:00:37
Humans first appeared two and a half million years BC.
00:00:45
AD stands for Anno Domini, the year of our Lord.
00:00:58
Everything that happens AFTER Christ was born has the letters AD after it.
00:01:03
So America was discovered in 1492 AD.
00:01:13
Now you need to learn how to say the years.
00:01:23
Same dates in English is different to how you say them in Spanish.
00:01:27
We normally divide the years of four numbers into two parts, so we say 1967, 2011, 1853.
00:01:32
practice saying these years after me. 1721, 1358, 1647, 1144, 1066, 1493. The only
00:01:47
years that are different are the years 2000 until 2009. So we say 2000, 2001, 2002 etc.
00:02:16
Now practice saying some of these numbers. I bet they're much easier for you, aren't
00:02:32
they? So did you manage them all? Good job! Dates with three numbers are just read as
00:02:38
a whole number. So we would say four hundred and seventy eight. Four hundred and seventy
00:03:08
eight. Practice saying these years after me. Five hundred and eleven. Nine hundred and
00:03:18
eight hundred and thirty-two, a hundred and sixty-seven, eight hundred and sixty-six,
00:03:26
four hundred and fifty-three. The last rule we have to learn is how to say zero in the
00:03:39
year. So if the year is 1908 we would say 1908 and 1403. Repeat these after me.
00:03:47
1904, 1508, 1702, 1101, 1803, 1605. Now we've learned the rules of how to say the
00:04:04
years in English, so it's time to practice them all again. Are you ready?
00:04:22
ready? Have a go. 1286, 2020, 1876, 1754, 1570, 1755. You carry on and do the rest on
00:04:29
your own. Now I hope you're ready to practice saying the years in English.
