This is the story of Romulus and Remus. This is their mother, Rhea Silvia, and their father, Mars, the god of war.
00:00:07
Before Romulus and Remus were born, there were two brothers, Numitor the king and his evil brother, Amelius.
00:00:13
Amelius sent a guard to kick out Numitor so he could take the throne for himself.
00:00:19
The guard was also told to take Rhea Silvia to the temple of Mars to become a Vestal Virgin so that Amelius could remain king without threats of heirs taking his crown.
00:00:23
There, she meets Mars, who eventually becomes her husband.
00:00:33
Together, they have Romulus and Remus.
00:00:36
Amelius is told by a guard that Rhea Silvia just had two twin boys, which frightens Amelius.
00:00:38
In order to protect his title, he sends his guards to kidnap the babies and drown them in the Tiber River.
00:00:44
Unbeknownst to Amelius, a she-wolf finds the babies and cares for them as if she was their own mother.
00:00:51
One day, while the boys were sleeping, two shepherds found them and decided to take them to their home.
00:00:57
Eventually, Aemilius realizes the boys are alive, so he orders his guards to find them.
00:01:02
After Remus is captured by the king, Romulus gathers a group of shepherds to help rescue his brother.
00:01:12
Once night has fallen, Romulus and the shepherds sneak into the palace, kill Aemilius, and rescue Remus.
00:01:18
The shepherds were happy that King Aemilius was dead and wanted Romulus and Remus to be their new kings.
00:01:24
The two brothers did not want to be king and went off to build their own city.
00:01:30
Romulus and Remus travel to an uninhabited area where Rome sits today in order to build their city.
00:01:34
Romulus wants to build the city on top of the Palatine Hill, while Remus prefers the Aventine Hill.
00:01:40
Since they cannot agree, they decide to have an augury to see where their city will be made.
00:01:46
Remus sees the sign of six vultures, while Romulus sees the sign of twelve vultures shortly after.
00:01:50
They claim to have both won and start to argue.
00:01:56
Romulus decides to build a wall around the Palatine Hill.
00:01:59
Remus is jealous and teases Romulus about how easy it is to jump over his wall
00:02:02
This angers Romulus and he pushes Remus off the wall to his death
00:02:07
Romulus continues to build his city and even names it Rome after himself
00:02:11
Once Rome is established in 753 BC, he gains an army, the senate, and crowns himself king of Rome
