A monument to human ingenuity, the old town of Segovia and its aqueduct. 00:00:00
The town of Segovia is in central Spain. It's known for its ancient and medieval architecture. 00:00:08
There's a 16th century cathedral in the city centre. It's called the Lady because of its elegant appearance. 00:00:15
This is the Alcazar, a fairytale castle. 00:00:24
The aqueduct was built during the Roman Empire around the 1st century AD. 00:00:29
It is 813 metres long and at its highest point rises to 28.5 metres. 00:00:34
The waterway is supported by 128 arched pillars. 00:00:43
Over 20,000 granite blocks were used in the construction. 00:00:49
The aqueduct brought water into the town until the end of the 19th century. 00:00:57
No kind of mortar was used to hold it together. 00:01:02
Stones are simply laid next to each other. 00:01:07
For the arches, masons first made semi-circular frames in wood and then piled stones on top. 00:01:10
After all the stones were laid, the wooden frame was removed. 00:01:17
Each stone is held in place by the others. 00:01:22
They support each other to maintain equilibrium within the arch. 00:01:25
The La Echeveria river was the source of the water supply. 00:01:32
River water was irrigated by a water channel before reaching the aqueduct 18 kilometres from the source. 00:01:37
It reached the intake point in town flowing through a 30 centimetre wide channel on top of the aqueduct. 00:01:49
Water first ran into the cistern inside this shed. 00:02:01
Here, leaves and natural litter in the water would be removed and clean water would flow into the town. 00:02:07
The aqueduct was designed to supply the same amount of water throughout Segovia. 00:02:18
The aqueduct's bridges were built at different heights to maintain a consistent channel gradient, 00:02:25
which in turn ensured even distribution. 00:02:31
This Roman aqueduct supplied water to the town for nearly 2,000 years. 00:02:37
It is a fine testimony to the high standard of civil engineering techniques used by the Romans. 00:02:45
