Plant reproduction. How do plants reproduce? 00:00:11
There are two ways that plants can reproduce. Sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. 00:00:17
First, we will take a look at sexual reproduction. 00:00:25
We can classify plants into flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants 00:00:29
develop flowers that have sexual organs. These organs are called the stamen and the pistil, 00:00:37
and they help them reproduce. Non-flowering plants don't use flowers for reproduction. 00:00:44
Most flowering plants reproduce by sexual reproduction. Pollen goes from the stamen 00:00:52
of one flower to the pistil of a different or similar flower. This is called pollination. 00:00:58
Pollination can happen in different ways. 00:01:06
Certain insects such as bees and butterflies can help pollinate flowers. 00:01:09
Wind can also help pollinate flowers. 00:01:15
Some plants don't need animals or wind to pollinate. They can pollinate themselves. 00:01:21
The pollen joins an ovule to make a seed. 00:01:28
This is called fertilization. The pistil grows around the seed into a fruit. 00:01:33
The seed is dispersed in different ways, by gravity, by wind, or by animals. 00:01:40
Once dispersed, the seed then grows into a plant. 00:01:49
The second way a plant can reproduce is by asexual reproduction. 00:01:53
In asexual reproduction, there are no flowers or fertilization. 00:01:58
This means that there is no pollination either. 00:02:06
Asexual plants reproduce by sending stems either across the ground or underground. 00:02:11
An example of an asexual plant is the potato. 00:02:17
Some flowering plants, such as the strawberry, can use sexual and asexual reproduction. 00:02:24
It is important to respect and protect living things and their habitats. 00:02:31
In the next few slides, I will show you some photos. 00:02:39
Try to determine if these are good or bad ways to interact with plants. 00:02:44
