After years of experiments, you've finally created the pets of the future, 00:00:00
nanorabbits. 00:00:11
They're tiny, they're fuzzy, and they multiply faster than the eye can see. 00:00:12
In your lab, there are 36 habitat cells, 00:00:18
arranged in an inverted pyramid, with eight cells in the top row. 00:00:21
The first has one rabbit, the second has two, and so on, 00:00:25
with eight rabbits in the last one. 00:00:30
The other rows of cells are empty, for now. 00:00:32
The rabbits are hermaphroditic, 00:00:37
and each rabbit in a given cell will breed once 00:00:39
with every rabbit in the horizontally adjacent cells, 00:00:42
producing exactly one offspring each time. 00:00:45
The newborn rabbits will drop into the cell 00:00:49
directly below the two cells of its parents 00:00:52
and within minutes will mature and reproduce in turn. 00:00:54
Each cell can hold 10 to the 80th power nanorabbits. 00:00:59
That's a 1 followed by 80 zeros before they break free and overrun the world. 00:01:03
Your calculations have given you a 46-digit number 00:01:10
for the count of rabbits in the bottom cell. 00:01:13
Plenty of room to spare. 00:01:16
But just as you pull the lever to start the experiment, 00:01:18
your assistant runs in with terrible news. 00:01:22
A rival lab has sabotaged your code 00:01:25
so that all the zeros at the end of your results got cut off. 00:01:27
That means you don't actually know 00:01:32
if the bottom cell will be able to hold all the rabbits, 00:01:34
and the reproduction is already underway. 00:01:37
To make matters worse, 00:01:40
your devices and calculators are all malfunctioning, 00:01:42
so you only have a few minutes to work it out by hand. 00:01:45
How many trailing zeros should there be 00:01:49
at the end of the count of rabbits in the bottom habitat? 00:01:52
and do you need to pull the emergency shutdown lever? 00:01:55
