Hello, welcome to pronunciation practice. 00:00:00
My name is Sammy, and I am an American English language student. 00:00:11
Today, we're going to practice pronouncing past tense sounds using regular verbs ending 00:00:17
in E-D. 00:00:27
For regular verbs, we usually add E-D to the end of the verb to make it past tense. 00:00:29
The spelling is easy because you just add E-D, but the pronunciation can be a little 00:00:38
tricky. 00:00:44
Last weekend, I walked to the restaurant. 00:00:45
When I got there, I glanced through the menu. 00:00:50
The waiter arrived, and I ordered a steak. 00:00:55
After dinner, the waiter handed me the bill. 00:01:00
I left happy because my meal tasted great. 00:01:04
These verbs all have the past tense E-D, but they are pronounced in three different ways. 00:01:09
In walked and glanced, the E-D makes a tt sound, walked, glanced. 00:01:18
The E-D in arrived and ordered ended with a d sound, arrived, ordered. 00:01:29
The E-D in handed and tasted ended with an id sound, handed, tasted. 00:01:44
So how do you know which E-D pronunciation to use? 00:01:58
There are three rules to remember. 00:02:04
First, if the verb ends in a tt or dd sound, use the id ending. 00:02:07
For example, the past tense of verbs want and need becomes wanted or needed. 00:02:15
If the verb ends in one of the following voiceless sounds, such as p, k, f, s, sh, ch, or f, 00:02:27
use the tt sound for past tense. 00:02:41
For example, we have helped and washed. 00:02:45
If the verb ends in any vowel or in a voiced sound, like l, m, n, j, r, g, b, v, w, z, 00:02:52
use the d ending. 00:03:10
For example, called, played. 00:03:13
Remember how we saw that spelling and sounds don't match up? 00:03:18
Well, look at the following words, missed, sliced, and fixed. 00:03:23
The last sound in each verb is spelled differently, but they all make the s sound. 00:03:30
That's why they get the tt past tense ending. 00:03:39
Remember to focus on the last sound of a word. 00:03:44
Both promised and closed have an s before the ed ending. 00:03:49
However, promised has an s sound and closed has a z sound. 00:03:57
That's why promised has a tt ending and closed has the d ending. 00:04:06
Now you try. 00:04:13
What are the American English pronunciations for these past tense verbs? 00:04:15
Click pause to try the activity and press play when you are ready to continue. 00:04:22
I used an umbrella. 00:04:32
The ice cream melted. 00:04:35
He pushed the button. 00:04:38
I studied for the test. 00:04:40
Next time, we'll practice pronouncing long and short vowels. 00:04:44
This is American English. 00:04:49
Thanks for watching! 00:04:50
