Hello everyone, my name is Sandra González and today we'll be talking about Ada Lovelace. 00:00:16
Ada Lovelace was a British mathematician and she is considered to be the first computer programmer. 00:00:22
Ada Lovelace was born the 10th of December 1815 in London and she died on November the 27th in 1852. 00:00:29
Her full name is Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, but her original name was Augusta Ada Byron, 00:00:40
mostly known as Lady Byron. 00:00:49
Her parents were Lord Byron, the famous poet, and Annabella Milbank Byron, who legally separated 00:00:51
two months after her birth. 00:00:59
After that, his father left England, and Ada never knew him personally. 00:01:02
He died in Greece when Ada was 8 years old. 00:01:07
In order to neutralize the dangerous mental tendencies of Ada's father, her mother insisted 00:01:12
on music, French, mathematics in her daughter's studies. 00:01:18
This last subject particularly appealed to Ada. 00:01:24
In those days, there were no places for girls in the United Kingdom's universities. 00:01:27
Nevertheless, Ada was educated to a high level by private tutors. 00:01:33
However, Ada suffered long periods of time in poor health, during her childhood and later. 00:01:39
In 1833, Ada Lovelace met the mathematician Charles Babbage. 00:01:46
Babbage was a Lucasian professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge, 00:01:51
a position once held by Isaac Newton or Stephen Hawking later on. 00:01:57
He had designed a calculating machine called the Difference Engine. 00:02:03
Lovelace was inspired by the prototype of the Difference Engine and became Babbage's friend. 00:02:08
She was also a friend of one of the finest female mathematicians of her time, Mary Somerville. 00:02:14
She discussed modern mathematics with Mary and set other higher-level mathematical problems. 00:02:21
The 8th of July, 1835, Ada married William King, at that time she was 19 years old 00:02:27
and they had three children together, between 1836 and 1839 00:02:36
By 1842, Babbage had a new project in mind, a much more advanced machine, the analytical engine 00:02:42
In 1843, Lovelace translated a French paper that Luigi Manebra, Italian mathematician, 00:02:50
wrote about the analytical engine. 00:02:59
She also added some notes. 00:03:02
Her notes were three times more extensive than the original work. 00:03:03
Lovelace realized that the analytical engine could carry out an extensive sequence of mathematical 00:03:09
operations. 00:03:15
She wrote an example of one sequence, how to calculate Bernoulli numbers. 00:03:16
It is regarded by computer historians as the first computer program. 00:03:22
She even speculated that the analytical engine could be used to perform operations on other things besides numbers, such as musical notes. 00:03:27
However, not everything went according to plan. 00:03:38
Ada Lovelace became increasingly unwell after she wrote her translation and died young. 00:03:41
Charles Babbage ran into financial problems, which meant he never built a working computer. 00:03:48
Ada Lovelace died, probably of uterine cancer, at the age of 36, on the 27th of November, 1852. 00:03:56
Ada asked to be buried beside Lord Byron in Nottingham. 00:04:05
Her work wasn't recognized until a century after her death. 00:04:10
90 years later, Alan Turing read his work about analytical engines and could have been inspired by it. 00:04:14
Alan Turing was the man who created the first computer. 00:04:21
The concept of a machine that could be more than a calculator to compose music, for example, began with Lovelace. 00:04:25
We can say that Ada Lovelace is the mother of modern computing and that Charles Babbage is the father. 00:04:33
However, we don't know if the child died in infancy or if it lived in some kind of suspended animation until it was rediscovered by Alan Turing. 00:04:41
Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. 00:04:52
It is celebrated every year on the second Tuesday of October. 00:05:02
There is also a computer language called Ada. 00:05:07
The Ada programming language was designed for critical systems where security and reliability are essential, 00:05:11
such as air traffic control, satellites or commercial aircraft. 00:05:19
Ada Lovelace represents hope, innovation and progress. 00:05:25
Thank you all for your attention, I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you in the next video. 00:05:30
