It is hard to believe that this picturesque countryside in southern Philippines
00:00:02
has been part of an ongoing and often violent battle between the government
00:00:06
and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, known as the MILF.
00:00:11
But in a historic agreement between MILF and UNICEF,
00:00:16
fighting was suspended in this and many other remote areas
00:00:19
so that health workers could reach these often overlooked populations
00:00:22
in a campaign called Days of Peace.
00:00:26
What we have agreed with both the MILF and government agencies
00:00:29
is that we've agreed on the principle that children should be considered zones of peace
00:00:34
and that programs for children should be prioritized and kept as neutral as possible.
00:00:40
Armed conflict has affected thousands of villages here,
00:00:46
leaving these children without access to basic health services because of safety concerns.
00:00:49
During the two-week Days of Peace, children and their families in 700 hard-to-reach villages
00:00:54
were brought essential services such as immunizations, counseling, and micronutrient supplementation.
00:00:59
In what can only be considered a success,
00:01:06
villagers and health care providers work together,
00:01:09
spreading awareness, gathering communities, and offering encouragement.
00:01:12
I'm so happy the health workers are here
00:01:17
because we don't have to travel far to help our children.
00:01:20
There are two more Days of Peace campaigns in the works for the Philippines,
00:01:26
one in June and July and the other in October.
00:01:30
One can only hope that the positivity and happy faces seen on the many villagers here
00:01:33
is an indicator of things to come for so many still unreached.
00:01:38
For so many still unreached.
