Building blocks for a 3D printed bridge structure
Hello, in this series of video tutorials I will show you how to design a bridge structure using some FreeCAD modules I've already prepared for you.
00:00:00
So first of all you have to go to the virtual classroom and when you log in as a student you should see this
00:00:17
Ok, so under the first unit, Technology, Technology Art, Objects and Technology Art Process, you got a link to the FreeCAD file with bridge modules
00:00:36
You click on it and then you get another link and when clicking on it you'll go to a cloud file
00:00:47
This cloud file should be downloaded like this
00:00:59
Ok, so we want to save this file, so we save it, you save it at any place you may find easily later if you are using your laptop at the school that will be downloaded under the alumno file
00:01:08
I'm going to download it here because this is my computer
00:01:32
So, once the file has been downloaded you have to open the FreeCAD file
00:01:41
So, your FreeCAD file will be under the main menu in the group Graficos, Graficos, FreeCAD, so you open the application
00:01:53
Now you are at the initial page and you have to open the file you just downloaded, so you go and open
00:02:09
Again, if you are working with a school laptop then that should be under alumno
00:02:29
Open the file Bridge Modules and wait for it to be opened because it's a big file so it takes a little time
00:02:40
Now you get this, those are the modules you are going to use
00:02:58
Now, first things first, you got all this for you to work with because FreeCAD is huge indeed and it's got a lot of different scenarios where you can do different things
00:03:04
The simplest one for you would be Part, please pay attention and don't click on Part Design which is a little more complicated, so you just want to click on just Part, like that
00:03:29
Once you click on Part, you see that some icons appear on the main menu here, right?
00:03:48
We are probably not going to use most of them, but again this should be the module of FreeCAD you will be using, Part
00:03:57
Now, you want to be able to manipulate this picture so you can watch it from different directions, for that, if you want to use the mouse for it, you right click and select Navigation Style
00:04:11
My preferred kind, probably the simplest one, would be Open Inventor, so make sure you have this selected
00:04:30
Once you select this, by left clicking, the pointer changes into those rotating arrows and when you drag your mouse, the picture will be rotated
00:04:37
If you want to pan, then you click on the mouse's wheel and drag, and if you want to zoom in and out, you can use the wheel in your mouse and rotate it to zoom in and zoom out
00:04:53
Then, if you get too big a picture, you can always make it fit on the window by clicking on this first icon here, Ajustar el contenido completo a la parte
00:05:15
Now you can also get standard views from here, you get this point of view for the perspective one, and then you can get the front, plan, right side and left side views
00:05:29
Ok, let's say we want a perspective like this
00:05:51
Now, we can check what the modules are
00:05:55
You see there are individual connectors, like these three ones, and here you check that in this area you got the model tab selected, not the tasks, just the module
00:06:02
And here you get the individual modules list
00:06:25
So, for the connectors, you get a 3D connector, which is this one
00:06:30
This is a cube, you see, with cylindrical holes, 18 of them, placed either at right angles, at the center of the faces, or at 45 degrees, here on the lateral sides of the faces
00:06:37
This one will let you connect through these rows, several of them, and make a cube
00:07:04
You can just see the cube here, if the rows are the right dimensions, meaning this clear ones, the sides are the same length, and the darker ones are diagonals, which are just this length multiplied by the square root of 2
00:07:24
The diagonals are a little bit longer
00:07:51
Now, in addition to having this 3D connector, because it can connect at every direction in the three axes, you got a 2D connector, which is this flat one
00:07:54
And this will have connecting holes only through the lateral side
00:08:11
This one can be used to produce platforms, which are quite useful when you are doing a bridge
00:08:21
And then you also got this 2D plus 1 connector, which is just the same, well, it's like an intermediate step between the 2D and the 3D ones, and it has the lateral ones of the 2D plus one side of the 3D connectors
00:08:33
So, that will let you connect other parts in two dimensions, like a flat platform, but also either vertically or at 45 degrees
00:08:58
You can connect from these holes to get them vertical or at just right angles to this platform, but in just one direction, not both of them
00:09:17
Now, those are useful if you want to connect a tower made with the 3D connectors with a platform made with the 2D connectors
00:09:33
Let's say that we keep checking what other finished modules we have here
00:09:47
We got the 01, which is like a flat one but made with 3D connectors
00:09:59
The BB02, which is the cube made with 3D connectors
00:10:08
BB03, which is a flat one made to connect the 3D ones with the 2D ones, so you can connect a platform starting here with a tower starting there
00:10:13
And you got the 04, which is like the cube but with a tilted face at the diagonal side, so it's not a cube, it's half a cube indeed
00:10:34
And then you got the platforms, which are this one, first one made with 2D connectors
00:10:47
And platform 02, which is a mixed one with 2 plus 1 and 2D connectors
00:10:57
03, you see 3D and flat 2D ones, and 04, which is all 2D plus 1
00:11:05
Ok, so those are the building blocks we are going to use to make our bridges structure
00:11:18
And in the next video tutorial I will show you how to duplicate the modules and place them so you can start actually building something with them
00:11:27
Ok, thank you
