The Lovers of Teruel, Mudijar Architecture of Aragon.
00:00:00
This man was Diego Marchia.
00:00:07
He lived in the town of Teruel, Spain, some 800 years ago.
00:00:10
The lady next to him is his lover, Isabel.
00:00:14
They were very much in love, but her father forbade them to marry
00:00:17
because the suitor wasn't wealthy enough.
00:00:20
Diego left the town to become a soldier,
00:00:23
saved his money and returned five years later.
00:00:26
Isabel had been forced to marry another man just before his return.
00:00:29
Completely devastated by the news, he fell to the ground and died instantly.
00:00:33
Diego was buried beneath the chapel.
00:00:38
Then Isabel died when she heard the news of his death.
00:00:40
So touched by their obviously strong love,
00:00:44
their families decided to allow them to be together here
00:00:46
and arranged for their coffins to be laid next to each other.
00:00:49
This is San Pedro Church, where their tombs lie.
00:00:53
The town of Teruel in Aragon is in central Spain.
00:00:56
By the end of the 12th century, the Spanish Christians had fought the Muslims and recaptured most of the land.
00:01:01
However, many Muslims remained in the Aragon region.
00:01:07
They were called Mujirah, which means those who stayed in Arabic.
00:01:11
Among the Mujirah were many builders and craftsmen.
00:01:17
They incorporated Muslim decoration into Christian church construction
00:01:20
and formed a new architectural style, later known as Mudikar style.
00:01:24
El Salvador Tower was used as a watchtower.
00:01:31
This is Santa Maria Cathedral in the centre of the town.
00:01:42
The ceiling of this cathedral is also considered to be a Mudikar masterpiece.
00:01:46
Pictures were drawn inside each coffered frame of the ceiling.
