The bicycle is still having trouble imposing itself in the European urban environment. Getting around town on a bike can be a real battle. Projects, financed by the Intelligent Energy - Europe programme, helped in Bucharest (RO), Bolzano (I) and Bromley(UK).
The bicycle is still having trouble imposing itself in the European urban environment.
00:00:00
Getting around town on a bike is still all too often a real battle.
00:00:07
The infrastructures are often poor, the roads are dangerous,
00:00:11
but it's mainly the behavior of car drivers which is the problem.
00:00:14
A problem that the cyclists of Bucharest, like Florin, know well.
00:00:19
They don't consider us to be proper road users, so it's difficult.
00:00:24
Over the last decade, the number of bicycles in Bucharest has almost doubled.
00:00:32
Traffic is heavy there and cyclists have trouble fitting in.
00:00:37
We have air pollution, noise pollution, all sorts,
00:00:42
and we want to get rid of all that to have a cleaner city.
00:00:46
And so we have to promote other forms of transport, such as public transport and bicycles.
00:00:52
The city has also started to build dozens of kilometers of cycle paths.
00:01:03
Bucharest has become involved in the Spicycle project,
00:01:09
supported by the European Union's Intelligent Energy Europe program,
00:01:12
which is helping several cities to develop the use of the bicycle.
00:01:17
In Bolzano, in the north of Italy, on the other hand, the bicycle already plays a central role.
00:01:25
In just a few years, this bilingual city has become a model of sustainable mobility.
00:01:31
The policy implemented by Bolzano over the last few years is certainly a decisive factor in the success.
00:01:39
We have 80,000 cycle journeys a day, representing more than 25% of the city's traffic.
00:01:46
With the help of the BiPAD scheme, also co-financed by Intelligent Energy Europe
00:01:56
and involving more than 100 European cities,
00:02:01
the municipality made a heavy investment in order to make the city more accessible to cyclists
00:02:04
and therefore a more pleasant place to live.
00:02:10
An in-depth audit was necessary.
00:02:12
And then a network of cycle paths, bicycle parking places and a bike rental system were established.
00:02:15
We've had a nice little tour. It's practical and quicker to get around town.
00:02:23
This is Bromley, in the southern suburbs of London.
00:02:28
Here the council has organized training for young people as part of another European project, the Astute program.
00:02:31
We want to give them that training when they're younger,
00:02:38
so they become more adept, much better cyclists as young people.
00:02:41
And you realize that training has other positive effects on these young adults of tomorrow.
00:02:48
I like using a bike more because you feel like you're doing more,
00:02:53
like you're using up more energy, which is more fun than just sitting in a car doing nothing.
00:02:59
A bike doesn't use up any fuel, so it's more friendly to the environment.
00:03:06
Enjoying yourself, taking some exercise and protecting the environment.
00:03:16
Three good reasons for European cities to promote the bicycle
00:03:20
as an alternative to polluting transport and so make cyclists' lives easier.
