Emotional intelligence

Developing a balanced and amateur personality is one of the main goals of adolescence. 00:00:00
In order to do that, it is essential that we learn emotional skills. 00:00:09
The American psychologist Daniel Goldman talked about emotional intelligence in order to explain 00:00:15
this. 00:00:23
I'm sure that you know some people that are very clever with mathematics but are not very 00:00:26
good at making friends. 00:00:30
This person has a lot of mathematical intelligence but lacks emotional intelligence. 00:00:32
So what is emotional intelligence? 00:00:40
Emotional intelligence is the ability to know what you feel and what other people feel and 00:00:44
the ability to manage your own emotions in a positive way. 00:00:50
It is extremely important in order to have a good relationship with other people. 00:00:55
So one very basic objective of the period of life you are experiencing now is that you 00:01:00
develop a good emotional intelligence. 00:01:07
Daniel Goldman identified five different elements that form part of emotional intelligence. 00:01:10
The first one is self-awareness, which means being able to identify what you feel and being 00:01:17
able to express it. 00:01:26
The second one is self-control. 00:01:29
This means the ability to control what you do with your feelings. 00:01:32
Of course, you cannot control what you feel. 00:01:38
You cannot decide if you're angry or you're happy, but you can control what you do when 00:01:43
you experience these feelings. 00:01:49
That's what we call self-control. 00:01:51
The third element is self-motivation. 00:01:54
Self-motivation is the ability to find reasons in order to persist doing what we do to achieve 00:02:00
our goals. 00:02:07
I'll give you an example. 00:02:08
Some students find it hard to study. 00:02:11
They don't like it very much, but then they think how important it is for them to have 00:02:13
a certificate or to find a good job in the future. 00:02:19
So they find reasons to continue studying even if they don't like it very much. 00:02:23
These students can motivate themselves to find reasons to continue to persist studying. 00:02:28
The fourth element Goldman talks about is empathy. 00:02:38
Empathy is the ability to place yourself in the other person's position, or as we say 00:02:42
in English, on the other person's shoes. 00:02:47
If you can place yourself in the other person's position, you can imagine how he or she feels 00:02:51
and what he or she needs, and that is extremely important in order to have a good relationship 00:02:57
with them. 00:03:03
Finally, the last element Goldman talks about is the ability to develop interpersonal skills. 00:03:04
What are interpersonal skills? 00:03:14
Interpersonal skills are the abilities that help us to have a good relationship with others. 00:03:17
For example, a very important interpersonal skill is the ability to ask someone a favor 00:03:24
or to apologize when we make a mistake or to coordinate a group or to solve conflicts 00:03:32
using dialogue. 00:03:41
These five elements are extremely important in order to develop your emotional intelligence. 00:03:44
